How many collisions are there between large ships and pleasure yachts in the Solent every year? How many result in injury. How many are the yacht's fault? I think the answer may be near zero to all three.

Yachts are very good at avoiding shipping IME. Perhaps pilots and officers should learn how manoeuvrable yachts are and fret a little less.

Elsewhere in the news 'the man' is telling us that we shouldn't go in a canoe in swimming trunks and shouldn't rescue a casualty unless we can radio the coast guard.

They can all **** themselves AFAIC.

Having been caught out by ships on unexpected tracks in the east Solent, I recently called VTS to ask what course in the channel a cruise ship was going to take heading east from the Solent. I was somewhat dissappointed with the what are you stupid or something attitude I had in the response.
But at least they answered, and told me what I needed to know to stay out the way. I have twice tried on the VHF to call ships approaching to me in the Solent to ask of their intentions (one Naval vessel, and one large ship), neither answered.
