Has anyone any opinions on sail lofts in the solent area as I'll be looking for a new hanked=on headsail for a 26 footer shortly? Last time I needed a sail altering I received some truly outstandingly poor service (from a very well known establishment) and I'm now wondering who's good, bad (I already know the ugly one).

Any views?

I have had good service from Sanders, not the cheapest but they will measure your boat rather than asssume the sizes. I had a main from them which has been excellent and I have a #2 this year but I have not had chance to use it yet.

Flew Sails at Wicor Marine are very helpful.
If it is a class boat, I would look at the class sailmakers, they will have done the design work already.

I wish I had gone to Crusader in Poole.

As a general rule the Solent lofts are a bit too oriented towards performance and laminate sailcloth exotica.

Another happy Sanders customer here. Peter Sanders takes a lot of care to get the measurements right, by actually turning up himself and doing the job properly, and the product is high quality. Not the cheapest, but he can provide different sails in a range of fabrics which means that most people's budgets can be accomodated, and you're paying for a bespoke service which has a value to those that want it, after all. No connection other than as a satisfied customer, etc.
