Solent question.

No moronic radio checks either :)

What's wrong with radio checks? Ru88ell used to do one every time he launched, and given how many boats launch in the Solent there are probably fewer unnecessary checks than most people think. Of course, they all ought to be on 67...

I'm not sure that the MPZ actually cares about the water being too shallow. So you get potty situations where the safest thing to do is to sail into shallow water, but technically it's prohibited.
It will be interesting to see if it is policed any differently next season, now they have a high profile conviction.
You can't be in the MPZ if you're not in the main channel. Effectively, the 1000 metre zone stops existing as soon as it projects beyond the shaded area on the chart, which we were outside.

That may be the effect of the regulations in practice but, if you read them carefully, that is not what it actually says. Proabably sloppy drafting, rather than done intentionally, but the MPZ is created as soon as the big ship is inside the precautionary area. Nothing within the rules says that the 100m or 1000m actually stops when it reaches the edge of the channel.

Strictly, therefore, it would be possible to be dried out in the shallows close inshore between Stansore Point and Calshot and be in breach of the MPZ everytime a big red'un does a right hand down around West Bramble.

As I said, almost certainly not intended that way (and not enforced that way either), but that is what it says.

Indeed.
The zone is also 'ahead' of the vessel and makes no allowance for cross tide, which can be significant, even though the ship will be going relatively quickly.

Lets see.

1000 m is aproximatly 5 cables or half a mile.
and 100m ither side is 200 m wide puls width so 1 and a bit cables or even 1.5 cables if ship was 100m wide

Half a mile in front of a big ship is increadably close. The bridge may loose sight of you if you half that.

The turning circle of the average Big Red tanker would be just under 5 cables or slightly less than half a mile. At Full sea speed aproximatly 15k Wheel hard Over. 90 deg 2 or 3 min 180 aprox 6 or 8 speed reduced aproximatly 1/2 full 360 about 15 min speed down to 3 or 4 knots.

Crash stop from full sea speed 1.2 to 1.6 miles. depending upon how Big the Big in Red Tanker is.

At manouvering speed those distances and time would be some what less. In the Solent a Big Red Tanker would probabaly be at reduced manouvering speed aprox 10 or 11 knots.

Regardless of the specific sise of the zone or rules I would sugest it is less than wise to pass half a mile in front of one.

A rule of thumb I use is at least 1 cable ahead for every knot. when Im on a fast boat going fast.
