In throes of moving boat from West Country to East Coast, in view of fact now living in Bedford and fancy a try at Holland next year. Got as far as Hamble before work intervened and now looks like end of September before able to manage the remaining passage(s). As a tight-fisted Yorkshireman, opted for cheap option of visitor pile moorings in Hamble (£33 per week) since not needing access and so couldn't justify pontoon (£100 pw) or marina (???).

Now fretting about the awful things that could be happening in my absence as other boats move onto and off the piles - seem to be about 5 or 6 in each set of piles. Have paid until end August and certainly not wasting that but does anybody have any suggestions for cheap, safe place I could go for until end September. Boat 10.7m, 1.6m draught (fin)? Would have to be within 1 day sail from Hamble - preferably going E (Portsmouth, Chichester, etc)

All suggestions appreciated.

Wicormarine at Fareham, top end of Portsmouth Harbour. A bit off the beaten track and well spoken of by everyone I have ever heard mention them. Mind you, by September, the Hamble will have quietened down quite a lot. I fear that the maximum potential for damage to your pride and joy is over the next few weeks, during the school holidays and whilst you are still there.

You could ring Hayling Yacht Co. and see if there's a spare swinging mooring (02392 463592). Mill Rythe creek in Chichester Harbour; even more out of the way but very quiet and about as cheap as you are likely to get in these parts.
