Solent marina's , please improve on the BASICS

Must say we've never experienced any problems on our pontoon at Swanwick (she says, hoping they've fixed the two hoses our end :D). Yeh, you get the odd splinter but hey, they're wooden and I tend to be barefoot so I expect it from time to time. No biggy. The only wobbly pontoon I've ever experienced there, is a finger on D pontoon. Now that's REALLY wobbly.
Gotta say, I love where we are and I find the marina guys and girls there great to deal with. If there are any issues...they're usually on it straight away.

I defended Mercury against the OP's accusations earlier in this thread, but as also a berth holder (until the end of July), at Port Solent I should just add that this too is a very tidy marina, seems well run, friendly & helpful marina staff. I would say the facilities are nice, clean and a cut above anything this side of Berthons. A bit of a change to have so many choices of eatery on your door step add to that a cinema and it certainly has an appeal. Plus a great big chandlery to spend your money in and 10 minutes closer to home for me.. downside, stupid piddly pontoons, ours comes half way up our boat, electric system I don't really like (key pad type that you have to buy credit for) and has tripped twice, both times because the whole lot has gone out I & the marina staff knew nothing about. Plus it is accessed by a lock (although ease of use with floating pontoons either side makes this the best lock to use in the Solent). But pontoons are in good nick and on the whole a nice place to be.

Very few if any marinas I can think of with dodgy pontoons or power that trips. Beaulieu may be a bit wobbly but can't instantly think of anywhere else.

I think it is totally unreasonable to make a sweeping statement about Solent marinas when there are many good marinas, so don't tar all with the same bad brush. This is my 20th year in Southsea Marina and I have never experienced any of the problems you list. Pontoons are always clean, hoses on reels and always wound up, rubbish is negligible to non existent. We do have a dog poo problem but that is inconsiderate berth holders and the long suffering marina staff are doing their best to deal with it when they find them. Some dog owners think they don't need to clear up if their dogs poop on grass but when boats are out of the water and blocked off for antifouling, that is exactly where we may be crawling about. Not nice.

while i love the solent, and can see that many are investing in lovely wash rooms etc etc, and must say that the staff in most marinas we visit are a good advert for their respective companies, i am fed up with

dirty green slippery and bouncy finger pontoons, please find a solution!! I have had three bad falls due to green slippery pontoons in the last two years, it's lucky for them that i hate the blame / claim culture sweeping the uk

constant power trip out issues, it's not my boat, it's every boat we have owned

refusal to put long term contracted berth holders in big berths if they are vacant

hoses that are just dumped in a bundle, or leak or are on a broken hose reel

rubbish in the water in quiet corners of the marinas is often terrible

paul it is time you replied to people ,0r say sorry to the marinas

no Seastoke, it is time I do and say what I want, as long as it is reasonable and fair, clearly lots of people jumping on the bandwagon, I will remind them of that next time they moan about Marina's as they so often do!!. The bottom line is I asked my wife to read my OP, to see if I had lost the plot, she felt my comment about rubbish in the water was harsh as it applied in her mind to one place, that aside she thought I was spot on. People that know us, know we are honest, and know where we have berthed, it is true that we have done a lot of boating during the winter FY 14/15 and have visited a wide selection of marinas, and yes, I can say with a clear conscience, that my comments about pontoons, hoses and power were fair, and I could not give a toss what any one else thinks about that, if you are happy then that's great, so you should be, maybe we have just been very unlucky these last six months with slippery green pontoons and the other topics issued, finally as per my OP I made strong reference to the staff and the quality of the people, that was fair also. To create some sense of balance the best chain is in my opinion is Dean & Reddyhoff which is why I am planning to talk to them again.

I am with Dean & Reddyhoff Weymouth and I am very pleased not had any of your issues except the smaller finger pontoons could be a bit more stable, also Cowes was very good when we visited. only other marina I have been to is swanwick which was ok but I did have electric problems there a few times

paul why do you not name bad ones as we who do not use the solent dont know ,the point is to me this forum is like a boaters trade union and the more we know ,ie cost of fuel berthing wifi ,rlec price ,or shit service helps us all ..imho.roy

I berth in E Cowes, just got back from Haslar and been into Berthons, Lymington YH, Bucklers Hard, Hamble Point, Port Hamble, Cowes YH, Island Harbour and if you want to class it as a marina, Yarmouth, all in the last six months, and I can say I haven't encountered any of those problems in any of them.

This whole thread is pretty pointless unless you name the marinas you are not happy with otherwise nobody will take you seriously as there is plenty of evidence of very good marinas in the Solent.

Quite amazing! We seem to have found a marine product / service which, although very expensive, has a high approval rating!! Please don't tell MDL, Premier etc or they will put up prices further.
