Hi,
I am looking to berth 'Pilgrim' (10.5m) in the Portsmouth / Southampton area for a week in July. I will be away from the boat in this time so location / facilities not really an issue.
Any recommendations on somewhere cheap and secure?

TIA

Jonathan

Visitor pontoon in the Hamble gives a very good weekly rate. That's where I would do it for sure. It's not walkashore and there is no power or water, but you won't care about that if you're not on the boat.

There is also a special weekly rate at Town Quay in Soton, but the cost is a significant multiple of the Hamble visitor pontoon -- "cheap" and "marina" don't belong in the same sentence with "Solent" and "summer".

I was in this same position last summer, except I needed two months. I ended up in Shamrock Quay up the Itchen. It is still bruddy expensive but considerably less than other actual marinas. I couldn't do the Hamble thing because they were ripping up the pontoon during time I had to be off the boat.

Shamrock Quay is a really friendly, nice place, but it's on the industrial edge of Soton with hardly any infrastructure; very hard if you're staying on board and don't have a car. You won't care about that if you're not on the boat. It's tide-limited for us with our 23m mast with another 1.5m of appendages, because of the Itchen River Bridge, but that won't affect your boat.

I don't know what your draught is, but you might have some mooring options which are too shallow for us. There are quite a lot of moorings in the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour, and some very nice oddball boatyards. You might find something there.

There might also be something for you up the Medina near the Jolly Sailor.

Good luck, and share tips for the rest of us based on what you turn up.

I was just going to suggest the same!

Swinging moorings in Chichester Harbour are likely cheaper than any marina. Pretty safe too. Contact the Conservancy.
