A word of warning, I bought the Imray 2200 Solent Chart Pack a couple of weeks ago and noticed some of the sheets were very old. Force 4 have new stock and they all seem to be the same.

This is the pack

https://www.imray.com/record.cfm?i_stock_code=IC2200-3

2200.1 Isle of Wight Edition 2005, printed and corrected to 2007
2200.2 Christchurch To The Solent Edition 2012, printed and corrected to April 2012
2200.3 Easter Approaches Edition 20011, printed and corrected to 2011
2200.4 Chi & Lang 2012
2200.5 Portsmouth 2008
2200.6 Central Solent 2007
2200.7 Southampton 2008
2200.7 West Solent 2007
2200.9 Beaulie,Keyhaven etc 2012
2200.10 Southampton Water 2011

So a fare bit of updating to do as half of them are 5 years old - not too happy unless there are not many updates to justify new updates on the older one's! :(

That's normal, and is why we need to do corrections. After all, if they brought out new editions too frequently, we'd have to spend a fortune buying them to stay up to date, instead of applying corrections for free.

Time to break out the purple pen :)

As you have noticed the charts in the pack have a range of publication dates from 2005 to 2012.

its normal to correct charts until new editions are published. New editions are only published when the number of corrections become excessive or there are some major changes to incorporate.

All the corrections are on line so looks like pleasant few hours with the purple pen.

Only worth putting in the corrections that will be relevant to you which may not be very many

With BA charts, certainly for the less frequented areas, the charts tend to be POB, Print on Demand, so maybe we tend to get more up to date information. The downside is that some of these areas are not well charted. In some parts of the West of Scotland, the best and only BA Chart is at 1:200,000. With a chart like that, you get a sounding about every mile, and a fine pencil line is about one cable wide. It must be amazing to have 10 charts for an area the size of the Solent. So yes, you may have to do some corrections, but at least you have them to correct.

If they are really 5 years old, you should call them. It might actually be a shipping error.

Their website says its 2012 edition though. So this is what you should be getting.

I'm a bit clumsy so anything thicker than a 0.1mm nib which I got off Amazon I think. Frankly I use red because I couldn't get a 0.1 nib in Magenta. You have only yourself to please. You do need to give the ink time to dry on the coated Imray charts - not long but otherwise it can smudge. But once it is dry it is fine and resistant. I have pens made by Mitsubishi of all people, the Unipin 01-200 red.

I thought it was the responsibility of the vendor to update charts up to the point of sale. Does that apply to admiralty charts or am I completely wrong? In the past I have bought new charts from chandlers which have been corrected.

It applies if you buy Admiralty charts from a pukka Admiralty Chart Agent, rather than just any old chandler who happens to have a rack of them. Not certain, but I think it also only applies to Standard Navigational Charts and not leisure folios etc.

Presumably the price reflects the effort needed to keep a shop's worth of stock up to date.

Seven pages - not that many for the whole series! PRV is right.

OK I have just spoken to Imray.

You have to look up each chart for all the corrections over the years i.e. http://www.imray.com/corrections/IC2200.1-N.pdf These are all the corrections for 2200.1 for instance.

They acknowledge it is a PITA which is why they suggested waiting for the new set to come out which covers all 10 maps in May/June. They are still working on them so cannot give a specific date but said keep an eye on their website. I'll be taking my set back to the shop and will keep up to date with future corrections.

EDIT - I have just spoken to Force 4 Chandlers and they said they had an e-mail through from Imray this morning who said they will be recalling all the old sets to replace with the new ones - no problem returning my old set so thats good news :D

Somebody has got confused. You don't need to look for a separate sheet for each chart; for the packs they combine them into eg http://www.imray.com/corrections/IC2200-3N.pdf . You will find a section for 2200.1 in that list, and it should match the 2200.1-only list you link to above.

What?! I hope not, I don't want to have to buy them all again. I was about to do the corrections one evening this week and be good to go. When they replace an edition, you can't correct your old ones any further and they're basically scrap if you care about up to date charts.

The Solent Admiralty Leisure Folio (5600) appears to get a new release every September or there about.
Hence we get a new pack every year.
Cost about £45.
For us it is not so much of an issue because the charts need replacing one a year anyway due to wear and tear. The same applies to the Almanac. It needs replacing every year due to wear and tear.
If the boat was only for my personal use I would be stretching out these purchases for as long as possible unless I was visiting somewhere new.

You won't have to buy them all again, just keep up with the corrections but for me to start off with up to date 2013 charts obviously makes sense - good timing! Glad I called Imray and the chandlers. The e-mail only came through this morning for the recall!

Tidewater kindly gave me a set of Solent Charts (Stanfords Charts) so I can use those in the meantime with the GPS.

Nope - when they supersede an edition they put changes in it that are not in any list of corrections, and they stop publishing corrections for the old edition. (These are Imray rules, I think Admiralty may run them side by side for a little while.) I have to buy one or two new charts a year for this reason, for the area I keep covered. That kind of rolling replacement makes sense, replacing an entire pack is a pain.

Hmm see what you mean if they don't publish those corrections, you would have a gap from April 2012 to April 2013!

No - I would have a gap from (currently) 04 February 2013 - the date at the top of the current correction sheet. They may well publish another before April as well.
