This Friday, arriving quite late (probably dark) and looking for a sound place to anchor. Have decent sized Rocna with good holding. Boat draws 1.5m on a fin.

No sure about going on the inside in the dark and ending up anchored in the way of everyone/on the mud. Was thinking about the spot in the first photo I have attached to this thread. 80f from shore, 2m chart datum.

Have read things about strong tidal flows and bad ground - anyone have any information about this area? Also, looking relatively benign overnight not expecting a flat calm anchorage but is this a famous spot for rolling around all night?

As an alternative, anyone have experience anchoring in the little pool West of the charted "Lentune Island"?

I've anchored there before (even got it stored in my chart plotter) but found it very rolly when the tide turns.

Try Newtown Creek, 5 miles east. If you've not been inside before, best to anchor outside just to the west of the transit. Alternatively, a buoy outside Yarmouth (though this costs).

I wouldn't anchor close to Lentune as it's only recently formed and I'd imagine seabed mapping is not to accurate around there.

That will be fine - you probably won't be alone! High water is about 2200 and wind is forecast light westerly until Saturday morning. Often use that spot myself.

I've anchored a little N of there and it was fine, on mud.

Lenture Island: I'm sure you're not taking the chart as gospel about Lenture Island because it's constantly shifting but if you get there and there's a suitable gap, and if it's mud seabed and not shingle I reckon it would be an awesome spot. Decide on the day. If you do arrive after dark I suspect you won't fancy it unless you have a pair of young eyes on board.

One glaring flaw in the whole plan is that a Rocna won't remotely work, so what you actually need is a...

Ha, what do i actually need... a mooring buoy

You are OK, Never had a problem there with a Danforth type, CQR, copy CQR and Delta.

As to alternative anchoring spots, outside Newtown has a lot more space but if you run out of tide when you get to Hurst you suddenly get 3 knots against you making the one extra hour nearer 2. Depends also on your plans the next day. If you are on a long passage to the Solent, early calm just inside is valuable.

I always anchor Studland. Free mooring buoys as well. Love Newtown but find it a bit tight. Never done Hurst. Apparently it’s a good spot for setting off to Cherbourg - something about the angles.

Your Hurst choice is a good spot and easy. It won't be butter flat but it is very convenient. The anchorage inside the Keyhave entrance is easy to find in daylight near HW and is lovely, but take care to stay in the channel on the way in. Drop your anchor virtually in the channel as the wind will swing you close to the shore (not a huge worry for a bilge keel) - you might be too big but do your own calcs. If you have the time it would be lovely just taking a look and motoring out again.

Not if you are entering the Solent as the OP seems to. He is planning arrival at the end of the flood which almost certainly means coming from the west or south. Studland is indeed a good overnight anchorage but not for the Solent!
My acknowledgement was related to the word "free" rather than the suitability for the mission.

There's a perfectly reasonable explanation - Wonky Witch and Star Lord are Easy Jet Pilots. 😁

Hurst can get a bit rolly even in light conditions because of the open fetch to the west. If you’re a light sleeper, you’ll feel it. Not dangerous, just annoying.

Looks pretty sheltered from the west to me.

If the chart in the OP is North up, perfectly sheltered from the west, any fetch would be from other directions.

Often drop the hook there, never a problem. We only draw 1.1 metres, so can get in close to the shingle.
