I've trawled through old YBW threads and put together a list of Drying Posts / Places.

Sword Sands 50 48.64 N 001 00.89 W - W side of Langstone Channel. You can approach from (almost) any direction to allow the wind to blow you off as you refloat. Also benefits from some shelter and no swell or strong tides
Not free, but only the cost of an short/overnight stay
(from what I can see of Sword Sands on my chart, it's a S facing spit, so I guess that explains the comment 'You can approach from (almost) any direction')

Just in front of the harbour office compound, accessible past the northern end of the Folly Inn visitor pontoon, is a piled scrubbing berth. This is also available for use by non-members of the Association, although the fee does include temporary membership of the Association for insurance purposes. The berth can take yachts of up to 10 tonnes with a maximum draft of 6ft. This facility has to be pre-booked through the Bosun, and a booking form is available on the web site for printing.

Access is very much tide dependant depending upon the draught of the relevant boat. Water and power are available so high pressure washers can easily be used.

Please see the Current Charges*page for details of fees payable

To book, tel 07884 400046 or email follymoorings@hotmail.com

Don't forget the drying grid at Bosham in Chichester Harbour. Took a Moody 31 bilge keeler up there last year. Nice sheltered spot with power washer included in the price IIRC.

The habourmaster, Michael McGrail, was one of the most helpful HM's that I have ever met.

You do need to call/email to book an slot though.

I have a few snaps of the drying hard if interested. PM if required.

There are posts at Hamble slip to the right end of the quay and its pontoon, to the left of the Royal Southern YC.

Moor with the posts to stbd, ground is firm. I think they are free for 24 hours.

Can confirm Mike is very helpful at Bosham, have been taking Ronhilda there for 20 years now.

Another for Chichester is Dell Quay, at Springs the quay dries out, also has a hard to the north of the quay which I use, you just drive up the soft gravel after HW and put out a pulling off kedge anchor and warp. Tucked out of the prevailing wind and tide at the back. Problem here is you do not float off until late evening on Springs and the channel is not lit.

Itchenor also has big rings in the gravel ( or did) you can use to pull yourself off but people insisted on trying to launch dinghies over my lines and getting launching trollies snarled up. They also got annoyed when I went astern after the stern floated and my astern prop wash raised the water level and flooded their boots on the hard so I have not used this hard for some years now.

Bit puzzled by this one. Not been there for a few years, but as far as I remember it's just a somewhat windswept sandbank in the middle of the harbour. Seems like the odd one out in a list of dedicated drying-out facilities with piles, water, power, etc. Of course if your boat stands upright you can dry out on it (I have), but if you're going to list this then why not every other patch of sand or gravel that pokes above datum between Selsey Bill and Christchurch?

The river Hamble ones, near the Jolly Sailor.

I'm not aware of any between the Jolly Sailor and the elephant boatyard.

There are a set just downstream of the Jolly Sailor, maybe a hundred yards? They are in use on one of Dylans films when he goes up the Hamble if you want to see.

SE of the Jolly Sailor 50 52.92 N 001 18.26 W - Posts on shingle.

Langstone harbour - as well as the posts just N of the ferry pontoon if you continue along channel to Southsea marina you will find a pair to your starboard at the bottom of the slipway to Locks sailing club. The ECA have recently installed a pair to the S of the PUBLIC slipway opposite their club but good luck to using those as their takeover of Langstone harbour continues apace.
