solenoid for Perkins 4108

Does anyone know where or if I can get a solenoid for a Perkins 4108, made 1972. Mine is attached to a board separate to the engine and has a tendency to stick these days. As you may guess I am not mechanically minded and an inter-net search has not really been any help Thanks in advance.

Basically if your starter is not pre-engaged, ie the starter solenoid is not affixed to the motor then the top one should do,

These were the norm on early cars/wagons

Note the cheaper one will do but the benefit of the top one is manual starting by pressing the rubber boot/button

I assume you mean relay?

I had this problem with my Perkins 4108.

The current has to flow down the centre pin of the relay. Rust had formed where the pin was riveted into the frame, causing high resistance. I bypassed it with copper wire.

You may of course have a different relay. Make sure the contact is clean. My circuit is protected by a switch in the gear box. This prevents the engine being started in gear. Resistance in this circuit may also cause problems.

My starter has a adjustment on the top. It can be adjusted with a spanner and screwdriver. It makes sure the main starter switch is on just before the pinion reaches it's stop. It is possible for the pinion to reach it's stop without making a satisfactory contact. In this case the starter will click, but not always start.
