Hi there, to set to scene I have a 30hp Yamaha electric start and yesterday I bought a push starter from the auto shop. On the boat we wired from the two heavy solenoid wires to the button and to cut a long story short it worked although the wires were very hot and eventually started to melt together. Using the two smaller wires from the other side of the solenoid would not work. Is my solenoid goosed?

Could I try heavier wire to the button?

Thanks

Not surprised the wires got hot.....the new switch may be knackered now.

Recommend a wiring diagram so you retain the start in gear protection that most outboards have.....connecting to the two small wires won't work.

The two small wires from the solenoid likely need to be one going to + & the other to - for the thing to operate

Be careful- as you've seen, wires can get very hot if you get it wrong.

This has got to be a wind up surely!!!
If not I apologise and suggest that you use the solenoid as a solenoid ie join your button (if it still works!) to the small low tension connection on the solenoid and the other side to earth.

Re: Solenoid failure 2nd answer

Reflecting on my last answer...that won't work
The button needs to connect the small low tension terminal to the live of the battery which just happens to be one of the large terminals. If you get the wrong large terminal nothing will happen.
best of luck
