Looks a good deal but has it got a knife blade which is useful for sealing ropes.
I've got a 12v soldering iron which is OK for internal work but not powerful enough for soldering connections on deck suck as aerials.

I have had one of those for a few years. I think they are brilliant, can use them anywhere and heat is adjustable. One gas charge lasts for ages.

I have used one - albeit more expensive and found it very useful. As noted above, a hot knife accessory is perhaps even more useful as it will cut and seal ropes up to twice the diameter of the length of the blade. I spent a happy afternoon melting large nylon ropes for my permanent mooring lines.

You can buy 12V soldering irons - I have one and use it regularly.

I've got one of those and it's very good. However, if you are wanting to solder something on deck or up the mast then the portability of the gas irons is helpful. If there is also any breeze blowing then the extra heat of a 70watt iron is almost essential.

I've got a Dremel equivalent. I got it out in Peel marina earlier this year, and then lost sight of it for an afternoon as it went up and down the pontoon for everyone to have a play with the hot knife. A nice neighbour bought me a can of gas.

I have that model, and that's an excellent price. Very useful, had mine for about five years, and would echo all the plus points above.

The tips are cheap from Farnell - http://cpc.farnell.com/iroda/s-05/tip-hot-knife/dp/SD01097 - so only a fiver. Well worth it.

I note the £5 Farnell tips for the solderpro which Lodesman77 mentions are £12 with VAT and handling charge, although I suppose there's always something to find to bulk out a Farnell order

Soldering iron @Maplins

A very good price and very useful for small soldering jobs.Always carry a spare as lead free solder soon burns away the tip very quick.

They are not bad and that's a good price, Maplin though has really ramped up the prices of the spare tips. The ALDI one though is lots better, the same sort of price including several solder tips and the all important knife tip. At that price you can afford a new one when the tips get worn

I'm amazed at some of Farnells prices and at the range of stuff they sell. I bought a laptop battery from them and receive a catalogue nearly every week.

Farnell are my supplier of choice for most electronic items, although their subsidiary CPC are sometimes a little cheaper. I have a trade account at Farnell, so I don't pay P&P, but with CPC I just make the order up to £50.
