Solar panels and shunt

I could not understand why my aged battery monitor shows a poor state of charge when the batteries are clearly healthy. I have just realised that the solar panels are connected to the battery without going through the shunt used by the monitor. Can someone confirm that I just need to connect the solar negative to the shunt on the side that is not connected directly to the battery.
