Solar panel damage

Hi folks

Just dismantled my Bimini, which doubles as the holder for solar panels. I was sad to find one cell burned right through. No idea how this happened; I am not aware of any impact damage all year. All I can think of is a leak allowing salt water ingress; due to the position on the boat I haven't seen the panels since fitting.

Panels were new in March and not cheap. Hoping a replacement may come under warranty.

Explanations / theories welcome.

If semi-flexible panels flex repeatedly, this is almost normal. They are NOT built to flex more than a few times, or they start cracking internally. Biminis are dodgy installations unless there is stiffening. Read the manual--most say this.

Was it over a bow?

Was any part of the steel for the Bimini touching the back of the panel where the cell burned out ? Possible overheating ?

No, the panels sit entirely on the canvas section, which is separately supported by a pair of steel struts athwartships. Can't see how there was significant flexing in the structure. (Trying to attach photos but files too large apparently).

In the meantime, do the remaining cells work? Is it safe to use with one burned out cell?

You will need to check the panel with a multimeter.

Google micro-cracking of solar cells and you will learn that it takes very, very little repeated flexing. Google panels on biminis and you will read MANY stories of premature failure. I'm sure panels and biminis vary. It sounds like you need a rigid backing.

As for a burned out cell, I'd be concerned about burning a hole in my bimini or starting a fire.
