We need a 1.5m ish stainless pole, about 50mm. Any suggestions in Ipswich/Woodbridge? Mr Satinless in Woolverstone is terrifically expensive.

There's a guy at Pin Mill who made us a new lower section of our s/s ladder. Can't recall his name but Gerald off Goldfinch will know him.
He was recommended by another stainless fabricator - Michael Jackson (no, not that one) who is based out near Bucklesham.

Assume you mean Mr Stainless at SYH?
If so, never accept the first quote. Encourage them to 'reconsider and think of another number'.
Over the years, they've done quite a bit of work for us - top quality and at a VERY competitive price.

He quoted £4k to £8k for my radar arch.
I was so stunned I forgot to ask him for another number.

The chap at Pin Mill works from a container in Kings Yard. I can't recall his name, but contact would be through the boatyard 01473 780258. He made a new chainplate for me which was exactly to spec and a very reasonable price for the work involved.

Must have been a 'f*** off, I'm busy' quote.
When I was considering such a thing 3 years ago he quoted me 1.7K - which considering that Fox's quoted me 3K for same I considered quite reasonable.
In the end, I went off the idea. Radar dome now sits low on the mast and solars sit on the guardrail.

I think he does 'try it on' as he is so busy because his work is high quality and well regarded.

He and his workers have (IMO) a good eye for marine stainless work which makes the finished piece sit well and look the part. That's why I use him.

As Will says he is open to negotiation but he ain't cheap.

Sailspar made a SS pole for me with a cross piece to take various aerials plus a foot to match the camber on the back of the cockpit.

A Google will bring them up - ask for Derek - used them two or three times for various bespoke bits - found them very helpful.

I got a similarly ridiculous quote for my ladder (not in £s but out of touch with reality) - far more than any other local fabricators.
TBH, it sounds a bit lighthearted to say a high price to put people off a little when you are busy but it's no way to run a business as you will get a reputation of being too expensive and people will stop enquiring just when you are quiet....
I won't bother with them next time.

Mr Stainless did a quote for me for this little project, I asked him to do the same as an off the shelf small radar frame which costs £149 new and his quote for a slightly bigger one was £1200 so I thanked him and I'm now looking at other ways. Waiting to hear back from the Ipswich chap recommended here but I'll pop along to the Pin Mill place as well.

If Mr Stainless wanted to get rid of me with a high price then he succeeded. His work altering our davits was outstanding, a miracle job, not cheap but quite reasonable. I had thought a returning customer would get the same price treatment, I was a bit wrong.

I have to say that I agree with both you and Wingdiver - he is in danger of pricing himself out of the 'ordinary' sailor's pocket.

I know there can be a load of work in some of these 'straightforward' jobs but I'm now getting reluctant to get small jobs done because they always seem to cost me a lot more than I anticipated/budgeted for - and I've used him for a long time.

Pity he doesn't read this forum.
