Hi all,

I'm sure this has been asked before, maybe even by me, but I'm wondering if there is anything new? It would be great to be able to read my G2 Vision card with a bit of PC software, plot a route using the superior interface of a PC and then shoving the card into the Garmin to read the route etc..

Is there anything out there that can read a G2 Vision card?

Unfortunately not at the moment. Bluechart micro SD cards (ie G2 Vision) don't work with Garmin's Mapsource at the moment (ie won't display charts via adaptor SD card reader slot on laptop). But you can exchange waypoints with Mapsource and new garmin plotters.

There is a solution but it costs - you can buy Bluecharts (ie G1) on CD and us on laptop for passage planning and transfer waypoints, etc. This is what I do for the same reason, I find passage planning on a 15" laptop screen very useful and then transfer routes to the plotter via a blank memory card.

Imho, this is a rather large achiles heel for Garmin's new range and G2 (ie lack of current PC planning solution). They are the only one of the big three that don't (ie Garmin, Navionics and C-Map).

Yes, it's crazy. I've got a netbook on the boat all the time and it would be MUCH easier to do it...

When you say get a G1 with mapsource...can I then transfer it somehow to the G2 Vision card after I've planned on the PC?

Yes, I have historically used Garmin precisely because the PC planning is good but that rules out G2.

2 or 3 years ago it looked as though Garmin were going away entirely from PC compatible systems but they recanted on G1 and, hopefully, will bring in the capability for G2.

I think they are mad not to have this capability already. We all sit in front of pc's/macs much more than we do in front of chartplotters and it's such a step backwards to have to fiddle around on a plotter doing passage planning which could be done much more easily on a computer and then flipped to the plotter.

YES - If you buy BlueCharts on CD and draw routes on the chart using MapSource on a PC, you CAN then save the routes on to a blank SD memory card, which you can then bring to the boat, pop in a 4xx, 5xx, 4xxx or 5xxx series plotter and copy the waypoints and routes to the plotter, and visa verse (ie from plotter back to PC via SD memory card). You do NOT use your G2 Vision card to transfer waypoints between laptop and plotter, only blank SD cards.

Great, thanks for the clarification! Now where can I get the Solent card for nothing/cheap /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif..does the CD version of the map come with the cartography software?
