So next year if I want to travel to SoF to stay on the floaty "42", one of the things I am likely to have to prove to French Customs is that I am covered by medical insurance.

I just renewed my excellent 90 day/trip cover with Topsail, but no cover for Covid19, no surprise there. Lets also assume the EHIC stops at 31/12/2020.

I can't go if the FO keeps an advisery not to travel in force as that would invalidate my insurance cover. But the real question is, will I refused entry even after the FO relax the rules as no Covid19 cover & no EHIC to pick up any Covid19 costs.

Self funding Covid19 & it's complications would be a tad expensive anyway.

I know we have to wait & see but this will either be tricky or expensive, probably both ?

genuinely curious, are you sure about that?

I'm 57, never in my entire life have I bought travel/medical insurance, was never asked if I'm insured.
Heck in the customs they hardly bother to check if you're carrying drugs or gold& diamonds, who would ask for your medical insurance?
am I missing something?

As far as I know, the British Government will be issuing a new EHIC card to replace the existing one and it should be seamless
Sorry, but I’ve just realized that it’s for UK nationals living or studying or retirees in the Eu only

Once outside the EU it's a whole different game.

Unless deals are done we will be no different to Aussies, USA etc. Likely need to prove we have enough to finance the trip, proof of destination accommodation & a return ticket as well as health insurance.

Saga will cover you for COVID as long as there is not a FO advisory in place. Not too expensive either.

No one knows yet. It's rumoured that for those with a valid S1 before 1/1/2021 that they will indeed be issued with an EHIC.

Yes but ask them if you can spend 2 months soley on your boat with no hotel/villa/apartment & they will say no, not appropriate. Been there tried that.

Thay mostly expect boating to be an "activity" during your holiday.

EDIT: Same with bank cover to my knowledge

Switzerland did a 5 year reciprocal deal iirc Feb 19 for Brits and of course Swiss visiting / working the U.K. This inc the EHIC .
So the EHIC scheme is still alive albeit scaled down .

EU are stuck in the “ nothing s agreed until it’s all agreed “ mentality , but it cuts both ways as the U.K. will beef up charging foreigners for the NHS .Think that French boy thrown off the south bank art museum 6/8 months in Guys / Tomy’s or where ever ?

How ever is always best to have separate ins insurance cover on top as it opens up a wider range of treatments and sites to access it .
Some banks have it with there card , but there are qualifications.

I haven’t been asked to prove insurance cover in any country I’ve been to, never had it. In Aus we registered with their health service as they have a reciprocal agreement with the UK but that was after arrival, no checks at the airport.

They covered us in the knowledge that we were returning the boat from South Brittany to the U.K. during the period of the cover. Perhaps the returning makes the difference.

That's good news. I truly hope I am completely wrong in my assumptions.

Let's hope a deal is done with France from my point of view.

They are advising 'essential travel only' (note, it's up to the individual to decide if their travel is essential, there are no actual stipulations) they are not advising against all travel.

You should check your travel insurance, you will probably find that it is only invalidated if the FCO advise against 'all travel', which is not the case here.

Nice difference, as ever detailed wording is all in such situations. My broker seemed to be clear that the current advice invalidates new trips. They did cover me earlier in the year when I was in France when lockdown 1 happened.

I think that any travel advisory, which is what most all countries are on if not on the corridor list, essentially invalidates most insurance. Another example of our government doing damage to its citizens. There is nothing wrong with advising people that we need to quarantine on the way back. that would be fine and incidentally leaves us as individuals to choose whether we wish to travel and then endure the quarantine post this. However adding the travel advisory basically screws us or their own subjects. As always no consideration at all.

I will give Saga a ring tomorrow & see what they say. I see they will do longer periods & shouldn't shy away from my age.

I see the current RYA scheme stops at 69. As ever they aren't interested in oldies.
