Just my curiosity, but I'd guess that the majority of craft live in The Solent.

No I am serious. If you count the number of marinas in the Solent from Lymington to Chichester and IoW, that are capable of taking over 500 boats and I'd guess there are over 20, then consider the number of marinas elsewhere then I think you'll see where I'm coming from. And that exclude the 1000's of boats on swinging moorings in Portsmouth, Chichester and the many rivers that flow into the area.

Yes, I know that there are a major boating areas on the East Coast and the West Country but other than that where is there any concentration of craft other than isolated marinas and ports.

If somoeone has the official stats I'd like to know.

Wasn't there a feature in one of the mags in recent years that did a survey and came up with the "average" yachtman. I'm sure there was and I'm also sure I can't remember exactly which or when it was.

If you average the locations out of all the yachties nationwide, you will probably end up with a point in south Staffordshire!

I seem to remember one of the IPC mags, years ago, saying that approx 80% of UK yachting is thought to take place on the South coast. I believe it was Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset.

I think the two biggest marinas in the Uk are Brighton and Chichester?

I could believe the figure might be more than 50%.

I suppose next big concentration might be the Clyde. Large marinas at Kip, Largs, Ardrossan and Troon. It would be more interesting to compare it with boats per head of population around the area though.

there are a lot of boats in the clyde but a lot of the owners do not live there apparently, lots and lots come up from south, opting to keep their boats there rather than the south coast. Kip did have some stats of where their owners came from I think, will try to dig that out

what would be interesting too is how far do most people live from their boats, I suspect it will be quite far for many - I am 95 miles and 2 hours from mine
