So what are you going to buy/have bought at the Boat Show this year?

Re: So what are you going to buy/have bought at the Boat Show this yea

We spent only half a day (Saturday) at the show, the other half being an attendance at the Challenge forum on the Atlantic circuit, held in Ocean Village. Which was very interesting, especially the discussion on the return trip. But that is another story. Scary!

We spent a lot of our time with the suppliers of our failed equipment, all of whom seemed to be keen to get things right. Which it is now, mostly!

BUT, having seen a very good write-up on Sobstad Platinum sails, we bought a new laminated genoa. Amazingly, it wasn't very expensive compared with the other new sails we have. HWMBO splashed out on new oilies; settled on Musto HPX in the end. And that was all!

Had a quick look on an Elan 434, which didn't impress from a build viewpoint, when compared Cornish Maid. Nice layout, but felt flimsy. Stilll, it was on the Moody stand, so it can't be bad. Certainly looked quick.

Lifejackets, fenders, boat hook & pilot book - & Mrs Beancounter traipsed round oodles of yotti clothes outlets without buying anything /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I raid the RNLI stand for all there great rubbers and Little torches , great for looking at charts with at night, got some fun compasses and joking gave them to kids and hubby to help them get home, don;t think they were to impressed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One of those pipes with a ball in the end for transferring fuel, as sold by that nice German bloke.

He offered the option of a lifetime guarentee or a 100 year guarentee. !

Went yesterday, Bought one of those syphon pumps for transferring fuel (called a Super Pump) and a Plastimo Iris 50 bearing compass.
One of the best bargains I spotted was a folding luggage trolley for just £20, (can't rememember which stand) same thing on other stands £25 upwards.
Today I have put in a bid on a second hand Jeanneau 45.2, and am waiting to see if the owner accepts.

Great rubbers

Cor, I know that the RNLI believes in diversification but do they really now sell condoms, and do some of them have lights? Do they come lifeboat shaped. Are they twin screwed?
My new girlfriend will be pleased!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Great rubbers

After all they have a vested interest in promoting responsible semenship.

Well I was going to buy a Yeoman plotter but...

The guy from Yeoman demonstrated it to me but said he couldn't sell me one as they weren't there to sell it and I'd have to talk to someone from Kelvin Hughes.

Eventually I found someone from Kelvin Hughes who wasn't occupied who told me he couldn't help as he only sold books and I'd have to talk to another guy at the end of the stand.

After waiting for a further twenty minutes for him to get off his mobile phone (chatting to his mates) I gave up and left.

On top of that I had a snooty woman on one boat I was looking at tell me that if I sold my house I might be able to upgrade to one of her boats one day!

I'd have been bloody furious if she'd said that to me.....

(no - on reflection I might have said something along the lines of - "oh.... I won the lottery last night.... but I think i'll take my money elsewhere....." )

Bought new deckies for SWMBO and both kids.... so that's a guarantee that my ancient and much loved pair will fall apart imminently

Bought nowt else.... 'cept nearly a new boat... then realised that I'd actually prefer to test sail it first /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well I got the skillet and the clothes and possibly a lot more in the form of a new boat!!!!!! (I would like to be persuaded that the boat we have is fine but am struggling to find a decent excuse to not go for something a lot bigger and that I can stand up in)!!!!

A Bavaria is not a boat - it's sailings equivalent to a LADA.
If you fancy one, stand anywhere on anywhere on deck, jump up and down, if the deck does not give way... you're a liar

Re: So what are you going to buy/have bought at the Boat Show this yea

Being a mobo, I have no axe to grind. However, having helmed a Bav 40 out of Cherbourg in an F8, they don't bend, nor even slam. Straight into a F8 Northerly, the skipper and owner left me to it. It handled sweetly, breaking apart never came into it, and we only slammed twice on the entire trip.

Now you might have some agenda, but as a power boater, not interested in raggie boats, I don't. The Bav handled fine, and took everything thrown at it, despite me being at the helm

hopefully I can slot in a reply releated to the origonal question and prevent this degenerating into yet another BenJenBav bashing argument.

I bought some fantasically comfortable deck shoes - they look like a pair of trainers / plimpsolls and are superbly comfortable - so much so I put them straight on and walked around the show for 2 days with them on. The were Quayside and we got 2 pairs for 50 quid.
Also bought one of the magic mooring thingys on a pole - so I can pick up buoys etc single handed.
Apart from that got various sail and cockpit tent quotes and had a good look at various different boats.
I was interested to see that Westerly had some carbon fibre thingy on sale. I'm not sure that resurecting a brand which is mainly famous for repeatedly going bankrupt and stealing customers money is a particularly wise decision! I hope that they have got themselves properly financed this time and are not still expecting large up front stage payments from customers (effectively financing the business with customers money!). I would also be extremely wary of such a large carbon structure made in an 'uncontrolled' environment.
