So the Weather wasn\'t that bad was it?

With such an iffy weather forecast the Solent was uncharacteristically quiet this bank holiday.

With the worst of the weather forecast for Monday, we left Hamble Point at 0830 this morning (monday) and had a great sail back to Chichester before the wind got up, lots of '6' but the '7' saved itself for the afternoon!

Re: So the Weather wasn\'t that bad was it?

Think yourself lucky that you were heading East!
I took note and after an early Sunday lunch at the Folly, dodging the power boat racing, headed back to Poole with the wind on the nose. A good 6 in the Solent that eased to a 5 half way to Hengistbury Head. It was down to WNW 4 by the time I anchored at Studland Sunday evening then picked up NNW 5 this morning, luckily the rain held off.

Weather very good in Plymouth, but as it was Navy Days the amount of noise as the navy showed of was everywhere. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The worst of the weather went through last night for us. Lightning and high winds. Would not have liked to have been out in it. North of England and Brest got the two Lows.

You should see what some are predicting for next Friday. I hope they can find some nice weather for the week after during the record spring tides.

Weather was fabulous this afternoon

for a real flying trip from Ryde to Portsmouth....first time this season we haven't had to beat into a big wind over tide mind...which made it all the more charming. Sky was blue, sea was a wonderful jumble of green and white and we could only see a few other sails out....very enjoyable indeed.

Re: Weather was fabulous this afternoon

F7-8 wind-over-tide in the Swale mid-afternoon, on a mooring waiting for the water to reach our berth. Interesting. Character-building, even. Glorious afternoon, though, bright blue sky, a few fluffy white clouds, fabulous.

Weather wasn\'t that bad was it? Not exactly as forecast!

Had a Charter to Cherbourg, up @ 0400 Sat & listened to Solent CG 'strong wind warning' F6 NW'erly. Perfect we thought.
We had wind SW most of way & lumpy sea, F6 gusting 7.
Many casualties orally feeding the fish. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Forcast for Sunday return, early return to miss Mondays weather, was good 4-5 Westerly, easing down. This ok until late am/early pm, then it strengthened well up, causing extremely uncomfortable wind over tide conditions from about 30 miles south of Nab. Would like to report wind strength, but the Bav didn't have anything as exotic an instrument. Exilarating but bloody tiring.

Are any of these forecasts able to be believed?

Re: Weather wasn\'t that bad was it? Not exactly as forecast!

The forecast for Monday changed every forecast issue didnt it? I looked on the internet Monday AM, it was something like "SW veering NW 6 -7. Vis poor early good later". AS we left Hamble point we had cristal visibility and SW 4! OK so later the wind did increase to F5-6. But the wind did not get anwhere near 7 until well into the afternoon.

AS we came back wind with tide it was a good sail, later when the tide turned against the wind I reckon it could have been interesting.

There seemed to generaly be few boats out over the weekend, people put off by the forecast I suspect, anyone hear any calls to the CG for help?

Re: Weather wasn\'t that bad was it? Not exactly as forecast!

They were all in the western Solent trying to run me down whilst fishing!

If I get my grubby hands on the prat in a RIB that thought it was good seamanship to go between me and another craft at about 25 knots when we about 20 metres apart and closing, I'll stick his sponsons in a place where the sun don't shine. Harrumphh.....

Re: Weather wasn\'t that bad was it? Not exactly as forecast!

There were a few calls for help over the weekend - one yacht with failed steering was towed into Northney. Another powerboat with steering failure going around in circles off the Hamble with the Coastguard politely suggesting that if they didn't have steering, perhaps turning both engines off and anchoring would be wise....

Those were on Sunday - we wimped out on Monday.

Had a very enjoyable sail from Chichester to Cowes and back again. Sunday was lumpy with wind over tide and we eventually put the engine on so we could get to the pub quicker, still fun though.

Coming back yesterday was fantastic. Fluffy white clouds, blue sky and the wind and tide behind us. It was a bit of a shock when we turned past West Pole and noticed the full force of the wind for the first time, though.

Always makes me chuckle when our lot (raggy) calls up with an engine failure, when there is a good breeze they could sail with. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yep, it seems to be a calamity if they can't get back to the marina they started from in time to get their car & head back home as usual. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Errr ... I had to do just that recently. QHM Portmouth Harbour regulations state that sailing vessels must be under power within the harbour ( amazes me how many ignore that though ). I *probably* could have sailed back in, but with a novice crew and a cutter rig with boom roller furling main I thought it prudent to advise CG of my engine problem.

Surely that's good seamanship ( in those circumstances ) ?

As it turned out I managed to fix my impeller and on restarting it seemed there was no substantial damage so updated CG via phone and went home.

I know you! You used to have your boat in Emsworth marina for a while, didnt you?

I agree there are always certain circustances when an engine is essential. But by reputation I believe you would have been most able to sail back into Portsmouth.
