So Targa 48 it is now!

I was trying to prove a point with my hypothetical question but I realize I failed miserably... :D

Still, it is simply not true that ZF was involved in the development of the IPS. Maybe someone got that mixed up because ZF is in fact a supplier to VP, but ONLY conventional reverse gears. Nothing to do at all with IPS. It's an in-house developed product.

Erik is totally correct in that IPS was designed in house by VP. ZF did have a 2 agreement with CMD but you can now buy this pod from other manufacturers.

Sealine did start to fit quite a few of the ZF pods but now seem to have turned back to Volvo IPS. I did hear ZF pods were more time consuming to install.

I can only speak from my experience having now run on IPS for 3 seasons. We currently deliver broadly the same MPG on our larger, heavier Targa 44 as we did on our previous Phantom 40 on shafts.
Interesting both were new boats 2007 & 2010 respectively; both have the same levels of kit on board, both run D6 370's and both subject to my anal MPG logs and calculations!
Illusion, thats an interesting comparison, especially given the fact that the engines are the same. Are you cruising the T44 at the same sort of speeds as the P40?
I'm not at all convinced by the savings in installation costs. Any savings are modest in relation to the cost of the boat and in any case far outweighed by the additional cost of the IPS drive itself. Yes, IPS has helped designers to install midships master cabins in sub 50ft boats and that is a definite advantage

Hi Mike, yes we cruise at the same speeds (25 knots), the only real difference is that our P40 had a Coppercoat bottom from year 2 onwards and we haven't gone down this route with our T44 as we don't plan to keep it and are looking to move to a T47. But you would think that would help favour the P40's ecomomy?

The bit about the manufacturer and installation costs now with IPS, was actually from one of the current Fairline designers, so it would be interesting to know if this installation method does now provide cost savings, albeit Im sure the actual units are quite expensive.

I believe this was when Sealine was part of Brunswick, therefore the CMD (as it was then) supplied Zues pod and Cummins engine were all part of the family, hence a shift from VP when the Zeus was new, and they needed some installations to get going.
