So now Barclays posts its profits

I have no argument with what you say, I used the supermarkets as an example of winners and losers in a compeditive market, its true that they screw their suppliers, thats another subject.

The tax black hole is another of lifes mysteries and chances are whoever is manipulating the figures the results are likely to be just as mysterious. But lets not do politics.

Its true you can shop around and get some good finance deals, but one thing is for sure, there is no way you can negotiate with your supplier when you fill up with fuel. Maybe if I were getting some benifit as a shareholder I would take a different veiw.

You seem to be about 26 years out of date.

Funny, my wife said exactly the same thing when I got changed to go out for a drink last night.

Re: So, you haven\'t been to China, then?

I work for a Chinese company that leases from Barclays; two days ago I was congratulated by a stockbroker on the performance of one of our subsidiaries which is a Hang Seng Index constituent.

I lived for several years in Beijing; never saw a Mao suit. Plenty of mini skirted dolly birds, though - some of them in Ferraris.

North Korea is, shall we say, a little different

My personal view is that the more profitable my bank is the safer I feel about letting them have my money. But perhaps some others see it differently?

nitwit economics

eh? Course it makes money - that the system innit. Most of it's money is made overseas. It pays tax, its 80000 ish employees also pay tax. There's no other way that a govt can get money other than thru taxing things. Especially if people buy foreign boats i supose...

" there is no way you can negotiate with your supplier when you fill up with fuel."

Not true Mr Etap. When using gas oil for my central heating I always used to haggle / run a Dutch auction. And I negotiate with my road fuel supplier by going elsewhere.

I wouldnt like to have a business where my selling price is controlled by a pseudo market in London or Amsterdam or wherever, rather than by my costs, like fuel is

The ones I resent in the fuel price debate is firstly the government who take way more than the fuel companies and then often waste it, and the rag-heads whose claim to revenue is no more than that their ancestors were sitting on the particularly useless bit of sand when someone else disvovered oil under it. At least the oil companies eran their money!
