My second edition of MBY fell through the letterbox during the week in replacement of the defunct MBM.

Having had time to read the first issue and flick through the second over a coffee or two, the verdict is......

I like it, I find it informative and really enjoy the long cruise articles. Sure it is a little less practical for my sort of boating, but very entertaining and that is the reason why I usually subscribe to a magazine.

So all in all, generally happy with the replacement. Of course the article on my dream boat....nordhavn 63 may have had a little to do with it too.

Anyone else whose subscription choice was altered by the demise of MBM made up their mind yet?

I think your post sums it up nicely it kicker. Mby is strong on cruising stories, new products and technologies and boat tests. It general has excellent photography too. All round I think Hugo and team do a great job in perhaps difficult market conditions and much credit to them on that. It has never been big on DIY ish stuff except of course that the our boats section does cover some of that - eg the fit of central heating to Piers' play d'eau this month, and several previous articles along similar lines eg refit project on aquastar 57, my prev sq58, and so on. And, come to think of it there was a full article in the middle of the mag on Bart's " refit your own superyacht" a few months ago

The practical stuff can be covered on here and pro forum I guess!

My girls bought me a subscription to MBY as a gift . I would have chosen MBM.
I think there is more reading material in MBY and I am quite pleased with it.

I gave up on MBM about 18 months ago and switched to MBY. While this is a subjective and personal view, MBM had become very repetitive, and had ceased to hold much interest for me. I also no longer snatch MBY off the floor when it drops through the letter box, but take it with me on long haul flights. The problem for magazines is that the Internet supplies so much information at the touch of a button, and I fear for the long term sustainability. Magazine business success is more about advertising revenues than circulation, although you could argue that they go hand in glove. So all the time that there is sufficient interest in advertising, the mags will continue. I really like what Neal has done with his on line mag. This is a good half hour read. Several practical articles, and a good mix.

my dream boat....nordhavn 63
Really? Sorry if I sound like raining on your parade, but very frankly speaking, I tihnk that's one of their worst boats ever - not a patch on the legendary 62 she was meant to replace.
All they did was stick an aft superstructure on a hull originally designed for a 55 footer, and later stretched to 60'. What did MBY say about her?
With apologies for the o/t...

Small booboo. Twas a 76 on the article. If I had the lottery win I would be beating a path darn sarf to put an order in for the N60 with forward pilothouse. Likely the first purchase I would make apart from fuel to get there.

I love the idea of journeying for the journeys sake, rather than purely for the destination.

I was mildly miffed about abitarily being moved over to MBY following the demise of MBM, probably because I made a conscious decision years ago to subscribe to MBM and not to MBY. Two issues later I am probably with tinkicker0, although time will tell whether or not it continues to hold the same appeal. I particularly enjoyed the article on the FPB 64, which is a very interesting boat. Not everyone's cup of tea but definitely something I would be interested in if I had a spare couple of million :) That and a Nordhavn of course :)

are there other interesting fora you visit frequently ?
what is pro forum?
every now and then I have a look at Yachtforums.com, but its a bit too far from my world

i like it ,it must be hard to please such a diverse reader with people with a £1000 shetland to jfm class ,boating is amazing how it bring s all of us together.

I liked both mags , I just hoped that MBY incorporated more of the better bits of MBM ie their practical stuff.
What we need are the practical type of essays that Practical Boat Owner have for the Sailing fraternity.
When in France I always buy Moteur Boat magazine , again brilliant mag with loads of practical stuff.
Going off piste now but check out the new version of Boat International amazing value for money in the new format .

Sorry Bart that was an iPad automatic spelling. I meant PBO forum, on here. I have little interest in yachtforums because here are far fewer posters on there with real knowledge, compared with this forum, IMHO

IMHO MBY has been a better read than MBM for years although ironically MBM bucked its ideas up just before it died. I always subscribed to both magazines because a whole month is too long to go with only one boating mag fix. It looks like Power & Motoryacht is going to have to fill the void

You can say that again.
And on top of that, the publisher must believe that he's dealing with National Security, rather than a boat forum.
Not long time ago, he removed from a post of mine a statement on an Italian yard, because based on my IP he assumed that I was involved with it and I was trying to make some sort of promotion.
After some explanations, he eventually apologized for the mistake, but I can't be bothered to waste more time with them....

Delighted to hear you're enjoying MBY. We make a conscious effort to ensure that there are plenty of articles that are enjoyable to everyone regardless of the size or price of their own boat and I am looking to intoduce one or two additional regular features on more affordable craft in the future.

As others have pointed out we do include a fair amount of practical content in the mag but it tends not to be the Step by Step DIY approach favoured by MBM and PBO. We prefer to hear about the projects from the boat owner's point of view. It tends to make for a more interesting and appealing magazine feature than 25 tiny shots of nuts and bolts. The Our Boats fleet is a great soruce of this as well as the Owners' Upgrade series. If you know of anyone with an interesting project under way please do let me know.

Incidentally, we've got a fascinating one of these lined up for our Feb issue about a bloke who bought a 60ft former drugs runner from a Govt auction and gradually did it up into a really usable charter/retirement boat!

I think that's a fair comment, e.g. Pier's heating described the principles and that he got an 'expert' to do it and if I wanted a blow by blow account I too would ask an expert or the many contributors on the forum, because I sure when it came to it I could not find the article again, but did remember the use of water and air in the system.

My subscription was switched from MBM to MBY and I like it. Whilst there are articles on boats I would never be able to afford they are aspirational and glamorous which is a dimension MBM did not really have. I also like the one page reports from individuals, all they need now is Dave Selby (I think) from PBO for a bit of humour.
I find I have changed my mind about it all!
