...and there is still some waste water gradually running back into the bowl. It's a Jabsco manual non locking type, age unknown.

The old valve did look like it wasn't closing fully when I took it out and it seems like there is less of a problem with the new valve, but the waste still flows back to about 1/4 fill the bowl.

What does the team think I should I check next?

That, as far as I know is normal on the three Jabscos I have had. As long as you pump enough times to get the poo out of the seacock end you should be fine.

That's why it's called a joker valve ;)

More pumping will at least get rid of the waste so that only clean water flows back but fitting a complete "Twist and lock" unit should solve the problem.

thanks guys, I'll recommend to the skipper a replacement unit, it's not a very efficient 'pumper' so it might not be helping things.

Did you change the joker valve as well as the bottom flap valve? You need to change both to achieve maximum sealing.

Richard

You might if replacing pump unit also want to investigate if you don't have one a little bottle that goes in line and pumps out some smelly blue chemical with each pump. Costs about 9.99 for a refill but unit might be more.

Joker valves very rarely make a complete seal. The flap valve should do however, provided it is clean, and there is no limescale build up on the slightly raised plastic ring onto which it fits. If you get a twist and lock you need to check it carefully as my first one leaked worse when locked than it did unlocked. The cause was that it pushed down too far onto the flap valve and distorted it!

I agree. Change the flap valve before replacing the entire pump. I did and it worked for us. Bowl stays as dry between uses as when flushed.

Thanks all for the replies. I didn't change the flap valve, my google searches suggested it is usually the joker valve and as they are not expensive I thought we would start there. I did clock that a complete replacement unit is not that much more than the service kit so I'll recommend it to the skipper .

Time to get the Marigolds and wellies on and assume the position again :nonchalance:

We have a holding tank in each heads with a 1.5m rise from joker valve to tank which means a lot of waste sitting there. A joker valve if seated correctly will completely stop leakage and we rely on that. It is not normal for any leakage at all and with our common arrangement completely counterproductive to pump until all waste out of the pipes as that would rapidly fill the tank.

But when leaks start happening and the bowl starts slowly filling I find that a complete clean of the pipes around the joker valve is key. And hold the old and if nessessary new, valve up to the light to check it is completely closed. Even some new ones are warped and need to be chucked away..

My Jabsco was new last year. After it sat idle all winter the bowl was back filling after flushing so I put some water in the bowl with a good dose of washing up liquid ( Ecover) and added the same again of boiling water from the kettle. Once pumped through normal service was resumed..
When onboard I pump a good slug of vegetable oil through every couple of days to keep everything lubed..

I actually bought a whole new Jabsco toilet just to strip it for spares which I took to Turkey. The only part not used is the bowl, which is in my garage, brand new in its box, so If anyone needs a new bowl send me a PM.

Is your valve a flat flap or a three part conical joker valve. I have an electric Jabsco that tends to backfill. Jabsco support suggested swapping from the simple flap valve to the three flap Joker as that is better at closing off

I believe that there is a flat valve at the bottom of the pump but I didn't take that apart (yet), just changed the conical valve so far,

I don't think there's any way in which you can change a flap valve for a joker valve, so perhaps Jabsco's advice was unclear.
