IPS has moved onwards and upwards and yet many of us love shafts, so if your new 42 footer came with with either D6 480's or the equivelent in IPS what direction would you go in allowing for a saving on shafts of around £25k in total ???

Shafts. However IPS is used, in the main, to free up cabin space, so unlikely there will be space for a shaft drive option unless it's on vee drives.

Shafts. I do most of my boating on inland lakes and rivers with a 2-3 week trip to sea each year. I can’t think what it would be like to take an IPS boat into some of the places I like to go.

Parking the outboard idea from someone

The response is mainly shafts but is that because we are all stick in the muds or is it still the pragmatic best choice for a 42 foot planing hull

If I was buying a new boat in that range I would have IPS.
More internal space, warranty, and you get to dictate how well maintained they are.
if it was a 10 year old boat I would probably want shafts.

For me its hard to find a open cruiser in the 40-50 ft range with shafts. Most come with IPS. If you buy from new and you know to spend some extra money for the maintenance I think IPS is OK. But I would prefer shafts...

What do you mean by you get to dictate how well maintained they are as I am asking about a brand new boat that comes with either option delivered in 2022

Shafts for me all things being equal but if absolutely the right boat for me came along but it had IPS, I would consider it

shafts - wouldnt touch ips with a bargepole.

But equally I'm not in the market for a 42 foot boat, so my opinion is irrelevent.

Why aren’t jets more commonplace?

very efficient from my limited understanding. Can’t knock them off either….unless you get it really wrong
