So how many of you carry an up-to-date deviation card for your boat?

As I recall, after a channel crossing it used to be relatively easy to get a fix from Alderney aerobeacon and either Barfleur or de la Hague. Good enough, anyway, to tell you which square mile of ocean you were in.

Also remember radio lighthouses, which were much easier to use. Never caught on tho' coz Decca came along.

Groping around in mist off Watchet with my favourite uncle I sailed with years ago we joked about asking a policeman for directions.A Hillyard sloop at anchor loomed out of the mist ,the owner gave us a compass bearing to steer and we groped our way in to the harbour.

We thanked the man later in the pub and during the chat it turned out he was a retired policeman /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Nope - but its just spelt wrong !! Come down Emirates Coast from the Straits of Hormuz ...... you'll find it a short distance down into Indian Ocean. It's just above Fujairah, the main Bunker and Crew Change port ... along with being a lightering / topping off point for large tankers in past years .....

We had found land but not the port. We were only a few miles out but had missed the target totally.

OK I'm still waiting to hear what you did wrong!!

In the 70's setting out from a UK port and just finding France was considered perfectly acceptable navigation /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Peter.

No, but its one of those "navigation is fun" activities I'd like to get round to doing. From comparison with plotter and hand held it seems in the +/- 10deg range so better than my ability to steer a straigh course while relaxing at the wheel.

Anyone suggest good/bad spots in the Estuary?
