So my Cranchi's starboard engine was smoky at around 2200RPM. After a sea trial with engineers on board from Metropol in Denia, it was confirmed the pump and injectors needed a service and possibly some injectors replacing. Price agreed at around 1500 Euro. Then I get an invoice for 5000 Euro, I query it and told "pay up or we'll remove the pumps". ahhh pumps in the plural I say! they went ahead and changed the pumps on both engines. We need to discuss the invoice, I'm happy to pay 2500 euros, i.e. half the bill. After some negotiations I agree to pay 3200 euro, I thought I was being pretty reasonable, taking into account any language issues and the fact that they are good engineers. Now, I'm told they will not do any more work on my boat because of the dispute!! I even paid an up front invoice in full only to have it returned. So, how am I the bad guy?

????? Who knows, but maybe they are not as good as you think doing a job is one thing providing a service is another. Difficult but you now will have to move to a new company which may be a good thing

well not a bad guy but perhaps a nieve guy! Over my life time I have come to know never to trust a builders or a mechanics estimate! Cheer up at least the boat works now :)

If, part way through the job, they thought the pumps needed replacing they should have asked if you wanted that doing rather than assuming you would. But, if they had, what would you have said?

Spanish companies, by law, must maintain a complaints log. It is inspected by the authorities every 3/6 months and penalties on the co/SL can be harsh.
Ask them for their complaint book and fill it in.

If they didn't discuss the extra work 2ith you first then I think you are right to be annoyed. Wouldn't worry about engineers there are loads to choose from.
