So Dylan Winter seems like a jolly nice chap... Great videos!

tried that

the google algorithm is the thing that decides if it is going to offer you my films down the right hand side. That is done on the basis of what you have watched in the past, how many of my films you have watched to the end and how many hits the films have got. By removing them from youtube and putting them away on a small website the google algorithm will decide that you do not watch my films very often and will stop offering them to you. This is the digital equivalent of trying to run a shop that is around the corner with the blinds down, door locked and with a google "its all free" shop parked in front of the shop.

If you only watch one of my films on youtube and watch the rest on my website it will decide that you do not like my films but you might like the click bait bikinis more than KTL and that is all it will offer you.

My daughter says, and I agree, that you cannot really ever beat youtube - you can only play by their rules. Their rules favour click bait bikinis over brains every time.. She says I have to reach through youtube to appeal directly to old sailors to chip in for the jowly intelligent man sailing a shit box rather than the girls in their outremar cats.

One thing I have in my favour at the moment is that over half the people who start watching one of my films see them right to the end. That makes the google algorithm very happy. It now watches very carefully how many minutes of each film you watch.

so clever.

Dylan I have not watched any sailing films so it is not that it is tracking.
Google is tracking everything else, and google is before utube.
So use google as they get in first and are only interested in their hits.

At the moment ktl will be in the first few pages of a search. If you can get it to the first page (keep mentioning Google and ktl at the same time) then the search ranking goes up.
Then google will like you as they get more hits. Just think of Google as your freind and utub as their servant.
So use utub as a shop window but stop giving them the stuff from the storeroom.

is that opinion or fact.

I get approaches almost every day from Indian search engine optimising companies offering to bring me to the top of the google searches.

As the digital guru says - I have thousands of people watching the films but only a couple of hundred tapping in - more than that now since KTL re-boot and gentle reminders in the middle of films.

so what do you watch on youtube if not sailing films and why did they offer you my film if you never watch sailing films

It is such a shame that the Islands are missing out on this public interest project. If the local tourist board radio and tv only knew about what they are missing out on.
In Dylans films there would be good weather and it would make them such a nice place to go. Even rent a boat to take them out and see the views that Dylan has shown them.
As ktl has shown that it is a strong brand with good quality it should not be that hard to sell.

ugly bloke, crap boat, not always saying the right thing... the tourist boards would not be interested unless we had at least four strategy meetings with flip charts and spread sheets -then they would give me £250 and expect their logo on everything and complete control. They would also want me to wear a life jacket and be tethered to the boat.

I cannot even get the marinas to give me a serious discount on the berths in the winter time - in the summer they want me out of there. The only people who can help me to make films about the scottish islands, around the back of ireland and the shannon are my fellow sailors who throw a few sheckells in the buskers cup.

it is a pathetic and humiliating way of earning enough to sail further from home than I could otherwise justify.

I do not watch films on utube at all (phone to small).
The stuff about google might not be completly up to date but that is how it was explained to me by somebody who knew how this stuff worked.
The companies just get a computer to keep doing searches to bring the rate up. The more times google and ktl get together the higher your ranking.

I think that the algorithm has moved on somewhat since you spoke to your expert.

For starters click farms as you friend describes have been rumbled and google now ignores them so they do not exist anymore.

I started to watch the fraserburgh video. After the normal ignorant comments about fishing i turned off. I am sure they are good videos of sailing around our coast
Both subjects i would dearly like to learn about. But i do not like the commentary, especially some of the viewpoints expressed. Hence the Dylan output is not for me.

Can you educate us at all ?

Are you a fisherman- if so what do us weekend warriors not know about that we should?

the stuff about fraserburg and the bad, nasty, upsetting ignorant comments about the decline of the fishing industry are at the beginning of this one - they last about two minutes

I would welcome comments about the tone of this film

I thought your comments regarding the impact of large commercial fishing methods were valid and indeed spot on. Hard to recognise if it is however your livellyhood. You did however have a little chuckle at the harbour, was it really that bad ?. A working harbour in a harsh environment will never match KIp.

thanks Steve...

I have to admit when I see a comment from you come up on here I generally brace myself for something pithy

on this occasion - thanks for agreeing with me

As for not being as nice as Kip - that is true - but it is much more interesting.

I go to places generally out of curiosity rather than a relentless seeking out of comfort and luxury. Life gets a bit dull otherwise.

Big drug problem in the fishing industry - and man those fishermen love their cars.

I am at a loss at to what exactly offended you so much ! A few interesting observations and a comment or two on the 'factory fishing' (my words) that modern technology creates is all that I could ascertain and certainly nothing offensive. Take a look here and you will see that modern fishing methods do have an adverse effect on our sea's. http://www.driversofchange.com/tools/doc/oceans/factory-fishing/

I thought it was pretty moderate stuff - but what do I know....

I am not fisherman and have only spent 40 years observing them and a decade reporting on the fishing industry for the old BBC.

maybe one of those nice bikini girls will film something nice about them at some stage to help redress the balance - but not until they have hit every sandy beach and trendy bar on the standard sailing around the pleasure spots of the world first.

Pretty moderate about the non sustainability .The vacuum ships could do with finding a way to reseed the seas that they fish.
Like tge lobstermen in padstow .

Dylan

Only fight the battles that you can win.

Personally I only fight battles I enjoy fighting. Provided I feel I've given my best I'm not actually that bothered about the result....... Same could be said of debates on forums!

Dylan, I've had a bit more of think about this since this mornings post and I'm not convinced you need to do that much differently, you certainly don't need to change the style or presentation of your films. I suspect that the vast majority of individuals who watch your films were as ignorant as I was about your commitment, investment and needs. A short piece to camera at the end of each one like SLV, Delos, RAN Sailing and such like do without it sounding like a begging letter might help. I don't think it's a case of folks deliberately deciding not to support you, the vast majority of your regular target audience are going to be only to willing to chip in, it just needs to be really easy for them to do in small amounts. The publicity and discussion that has arisen as a result of you recent decisions has obviously helped, but that's going to be a bit of a one shot affair although hopefully some of it will stick.

So it struck me that I enjoyed his videos every bit as much as Timothy Spall on his barge.

It seems to me that Dylan ought to be supplying the Beeb with some of his stuff for broadcast (and getting more recognition) and not just supplying YouTube. BTW, check out "KeepTurningLeft" on YouTube. Nice gentle informative stuff!

How do we (forumites) get him recognised?

I looked in vain at the BBC websites for a suggestions page... To no avail. Any ideas? ITV? Channel4?

cheers,

Dick

PS - Never met the guy but like his videos!

Reeddit a couple of the films for off peak channel 4 and give them the free rights to publish,
Channel 4 is supposed to cover niche markets ,The keepleft mark, would draw a bigger audience .

Quite a few writer's have made fortune's from giveing filming rights to tv cos
