So can anyone tell me what qualifications i need to skipper yacht out

Re: So can anyone tell me what qualifications i need to skipper yacht

1) Ask your insurance company and if they say OK then

2) Gofrit .....

3) Let us know 1 year hence what net profit you made in your 1st year and what your net profit expectancy is going to be in year 2 ...

I'll stand corrected, but generally in order to honour 3rd Party & Public Liability Insurance cover, I would expect the insurance company requirement to be Yachtmaster (Ocean??) with commercial endorsement.

Just google "qualified skipper".
Who would charter an unqualified skipper? Who would insure them?
A non-starter unless you want to qualify.

Why 'Ocean'? Is a sextant absolutely necessary?
Remember Sami, 'commercial' is an extra £17 on the standard Yachtmaster. Worth ^%*! without experience to back it up.

To find out what qualifications are required go onto the MCA web site and have a look at the proposed harmonised code you will find it under MGN280 and go to annex 3 Table 1 (Deck manning requirements small vessels in commercial use)
This will give you an indication as to what you need.
It is only an indication as I think they are still working to the blue book but I do not have that handy.
You can also contact your local MCA Enforcement branch and they will answer any questions you have.
Good Luck

Would be very surprised if you couldnt do it on a "coastal skipper with commercial endorsement" ticket but that would significantly limit your cruising range

You can get coastal skipper comercially endorsed. HOWEVER, speaking as someone who has done the charter skipper gig, I don't think I would have coped all that well with it as a coastal skipper. (I have done both coastal and yachtmaster, about 4 years apart)
Remember, sailing is easy when everything is going right, but when it goes wrong it can go really wrong.
Don't look on it as "what qualifications do I need to be able to legally do it?" look on it as "what experience do I need to keep myself and a crew of muppets (as they will be muppets, people who can sail a bit do flotillas or bareboat) safe?" And get the qualifications as part of getting the experience.

Did this and insurance stipulated no qualifications and I didn't ask.I assumed appropriate RYA cert with commercial was fine Suprisingly cheap: GJW offered me an option of about a 40% increase in annual premium or £6/day extra , paid in advance of course, when chartering, which suited me fine.

Re: So can anyone tell me what qualifications i need to skipper yacht

If you are going to sail your boat with people on board who have paid to be there, then;

The boat must be coded (i.e. equipped and regularly inspected so it up to the standards for commercial use).

The skipper must be at least a Coastal Skipper with a commercial endorsement on their qualification but really should be a Yachtmaster with a commercial endorsement.

To achieve the commercial endorsement you will need a First Aid Course, a sea Survival Course and a medical examination. (Colour blindness or diabetesfor example, could be reasons for refusing the qualification).

The full details are on the "official " web sites ( ie. RYA, MCA).

Re: So can anyone tell me what qualifications i need to skipper yacht

I thought it was DS/CS/YM but the important bit is the commercial endorsement. Insurance clearly would need to be sorted too, and isnt something in our sad/modern world I would cut corners on either.

"i would like to lightly charter her out with myself as the skipper
what do i need qualification wise to do this"

Depends upon your cruising range from "nominated departure port or Safe Haven" & must be commercially endorsed. You must have a medical ML5 (up to CS) or ENG1 ( YM Offshore & Ocean). Vessel must be appropriately coded.

Cat 6 - within 3 miles of a nominated departure point - MCA Boatmaster 3, PB2/Advanced PB/DS Pract/CS.

Cat 5 - Up to 20 Nm of a nominated departure point, in daylight & fine weather, MCA BM 3, Advanced PB, DS theory + pract, CS.

Cat 3 & 4 - up to 20 Nm from a Safe Haven, Advanced Powerboat, CS.

Cat 2 - up to 60 miles from a safe haven, RYA YM Offshore + mate (experienced person nominated by skipper).

Cat 1 - up to 150 Nm from Safe Haven, RYA YM Offshore + mate RYA Coastal Skipper.

Cat 0 - Worldwide, RYA YM Ocean + Mate RYA Offshore.
