McNicholas. As the years went by I enjoyed seeing ever more "McNicholas Cable and Engineering" trucks appear on the streets. An entrepreneur who got his feet dirty. Never judge a book by the cover.

Don't know whether you're referring to Tommy Mac or his faither, but totally agree with you. I remember Tommy turning up for a site inspection where they were digging (with drill and shovel) through solid sandstone prior to laying cable duct.

There was some minor problem, so Tommy, who'd arrived in a rather flash car (Merc as I recall but not certain) took off his good suit jacket, jumped into the trench and got on with it. Something that a lot of "captains of industry" would shudder at.

Tough rough work, but some really decent guys. Their culinary skills with "the clean shovel" were a sight to behold.

Recently went to look at a new development of houses being built by Linden Homes (name and shame). We hadnt gone out specifically to look and it was just because we were passing.
Car was FILTHY, I had an old Musto jacket on and dont think I had brushed my hair that morning, HWMBO needed to shave. And he is Irish.
Saleswomen took one look at us and you could see she couldnt be arsed.
I pointed out a house on the site plan and asked how many beds etc... and how much. She replied something around £300k. I thought this was a bit much as it was right by a main road and we had seen much better places previously. I said so.

HWBO pointed out another house - (away from the road!) and asked how much. said about £500k. Not being a fan of new builds and preferring to live in a character Victorian semi with a garden for that I pulled a face....

She said to me....

"Well you have to cut the cloth somewhere" in a very snooty voice. B*TCH. And then asked our budget. HWMBO then said 600k to get a reaction. She nearly fell over. We left and as I walked out I thought how she could be so snotty when she was working a Saturday afternoon, on her own, in a portacabin.

Like many, visited boat show looking at big boats while actually only sailing a dinghy. Mentioned that we would buy a big boat some time in the future but it was obvious that we didn't know much about big boats. Encountered the most condescending attitude from a director of Hunter channel sailing boats. We liked the boat but the Directors attitude to us prevented us enquiring further. A couple of month later after a paticularly cold and wet dinghy race decided that "now" was the time to buy that big boat. Remembered how polite and friendly the sales people were on the Dufour stand. Bought our first new Dufour as a result. I often wanted to go back to the Hunter stand to tell them that we had now bought our 1st boat but couldn't be bothered! We have now bought 2 new Dufours from that first experience. Sales people should learn that their influence is greatest with inexperienced potential purchasers that may appear scruffy! We now know what features we are looking for and the sales people can only answer our questions with little influence in our final decision.
