John, I I'm surprised by your post. If third engines wishes to have his account deleted, under GDPR and confirmed by your own privacy policy, he has the right to be forgotten. Surely you should simply delete his account as per his instructions without delay.

I can't understand the need to request any such actions, it really is quite odd.

I dislike certain foods(McD's)....I don't need any help keeping away from their establishments....I can do it on my own.

I guess some are addicted to nasty toxic forums.

That's a good point. Luckily "third engines" didn't use his real name, so we presumably don't know who he is, but the forum has his email address and other personal data, which they have one month to delete or its off to the Information Commissioners Office to complain.

Perhaps he should contact the owners of this forum direct? This is the contact address from their Privacy Policy:-

The idea is that all websites, forums, companies that hold personal data etc, throughout Europe work to one set of standards, rather than have 28 different sets of laws in 28 different countries to understand and comply with.

Of course its possible that you don't care about your personal data and don't mind big American companies selling your data to the highest bidder, or banks or utilities posting your data on the internet for all to see.

It triggered a "flood" of emails, but now that's settled down, I'm getting a lot less emails than I did before.

Obviously all the popups and emails are annoying, but it's simple enough to stop those.

In the real world we now have one set of rules for 28 different countries and ordinary members of the public now have more control over how large companies use their data.

This thread is a perfect example - you have a forum member wanting his data deleted, and a moderator telling him tough luck, without apparently realising what rights the forum member has.

This change is long overdue.

The forum runs out of date software and has suffered from things like the photo box issue which it continues to do nothing about.

Whatever you may think of gdpr it is the law and as recent Facebook scandals have shown misuse of data is not really something any of us can ignore and does give us worthwhile rights. The email opt in issue is simply the annoying tip of the iceberg.

Interesting. I wonder what gdpr says about ownership of posts on what is probably described as “ social media”. I would be surprised if it would allow assumed ownership by the platform - especially as the platforms usually claim they are not publishers at all but mere purveyors of other people’s posts if things end up in court ( I am not suggesting ybw has used this defence but many others have ). If they own the posts ( if ) then they are publishers one assumes which makes them responsible as far as I know ... which I would imagine is deeply undesirable from a legal point of view.

You’re missing out the bit where I said ‘...take a view’.

A genuine request to have your account deleted is always going to be acceded to.

People getting into a tiz and asking for their account to be suspended and then changing their mind when they’ve cooled down is a rather more frequent occurrence than perhaps you realise.

Fair enough and I'm sure the admins have it under control. As others have pointed out, there is no real need for someone to delete an account, they can just stop coming here if it is not to their tastes.

Kudos to you John for being the total diplomat as usual, that is the reason you're a mod. ( unpaid and mostly unnoticed i may add) Keep up the good work, we do really appreciate your help. This is a great forum albeit dated from a software point of view but it works and it works very well. I love the community here even when we disagree, it just makes for better reading and learning. :encouragement:
