snap shackles

My new boat (new to me) is a Tucker T31, she has a good set of sails but as she has been ashore for four years the snap shackles have a slight crust on them , they are made of bronze. Can anyone advise me as to the best way to remove this and what to apply to stop it forming again

1. Kettle descaler will remove verdigris from bronze, however I would go a bit carefully with it in this application as you don't want to wreck the internal spring.

2. Any light oil.

This is usually acetic acid or photgraphic fixer, if you can't find any in sufficient quantities
