Re: \'Snap crakle and Pop\' noise from under hull?
Oh dear TCM - struck a raw nerve have we? "newbies" - you weren't ever one of those of course....... Must show us all how to set your counter to start at twelve grand??? No you're not a newbie (not in any shape I should imagine) but with closing thirteen thousand posts you wouldn't be the slightest bit self opinionated either would you? I don't seeka guarantee on any advice I receive and put into practice and you of course have no idea how much of my stainless I "polished" before I abandoned the idea. Fact of the matter is though that ANY of it touched by the pan scrub is less than attractive now! Anyway - enough of this.......
MASH my little potato headed friend! Does the phrase "those who have and those who will" tinkle any bells??? You're best hope is that WHEN it happens to you, your precious windmill on the back doesn't fall off with all the wailing you'll be doing hehe! Left seat? - no it's a reversed negative of me in row 32F..... (and you thought THAT was a breast size???) You and ya boat well named "malingerer" hehe!
There you are TCM - spud has lightened my heart....... Can you see yourself to kissing and making up perchance? I'm not a bad boy really!
Re: \'Snap crakle and Pop\' noise from under hull?
Unit 18 - interesting. It was published in 1994 and later research takes issue with the statement "By snapping closed its large claw the shrimp makes a loud sound." The rest I've no doubt is correct.
The latest tests have shown that the sound is caused by cavitation, see for example a report on research in 2000 which says:
"For years, the assumption was that the sound occured when the moving part of the claw hit its stationary mate, like crustacean castanets. But new research has shown that that isn't so. A paper in today's issue of Science reveals instead that cavitation--a physical process that has long plagued ships' propellers--is to blame."
Getting a bit desperate now talking cars, and the thread is still only up to 77 posts!
Well you could start by telling us about the snap, crack and popping you will be doing with the girl shrimps in the back seat playing up and bugging you all the time cos no decent sound system.
Now we are getting close, and I bet Anthony who hasn't since been seen, never expected to go a ton thread.
So in that spirit, what twaddle, I was never out of order. Brett asked for it, with complete rubbish idea.
What no one has asked yet, is geography of snapper shrimp things. Irrelevant. There are many marine species similar, and many marine animals capable of making the rice crispy sound, through different methods. The sound link was only ever meant as an example, not a definitive answer to every situation.
Moving shingle etc just doesn't make the same sound, and I suspect most people here commenting just haven't heard the sound, so are not justified in commenting with crap ideas!
Re: \'Snap crakle and Pop\' noise from under hull?
While polyestermites are a darned nuisance, and a problem most newbies certainly need educating about....in my experience, they've never been responsible for rice crispy sounds near a boat.
In other words, bollocks, and I don't care if you are offended too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
PS. has the automated offensive word deletion facility been turned off? I expected a [word deleted] insert there
I have to come in here as being an old submariner I know what the noise is, but I thought I would amuse myself by listening to your silly answers.
We`ve had everything here from differential expansion/contraction to the coffee machine in the canteen on a nuclear sub.
In actual fact the noise is man made.
Re: \'Snap crakle and Pop\' noise from under hull?
Just to check out your theory I have sat next to the plastic guttering on my house most of to-day, so far nothing.
Tomorrow as you suggest I`m going to wait until there are NO boats passing and then listen to check out the prop theory.
So far so good.
…………..
Well Brendan , as you know sound travels well in water but radio waves don`t.
Througout the world we have an undersea big brother with listening devices constantly sending back information, when the Kursk exploded they heard it in Washington.
These devices don`t relay the information back with radio waves they use sonar.
So there you have it, we are led to believe that it`s marine life, but feed that strange sound through the right computer and it tells the powers that be all ship movements throughout the world.
See.
Don't be a complete twat. You know enough about this to be educated, so why try to explain noises worldwide, well away from military playgrounds, to suggest this is man made sound?
Well I dunno about that, Navy ships don`t keep to one area
and no one has a better answer,
Even our two resident airline pilots Mash and Courageous can`t agree, and the`re trained to recognize strange noises ( I hope).
Now I Know you might be a bit put out because you`ve found out you`re wrong, but try and be strong ,
