The boat we chartered (Bav 40 from Kos) had an interesting characteristic, there was a constant snap crackle & pop sound coming from the hull. My theory is ... it was the limpets shuffling around ... I'd be interested in any other theories

Jimi, we had the same thing, kept us up have the night because we thought it was a battery short. Asked the lead boat skipper what it was and he said its cold water springs coming out of the rocks under the boat and right enough when I snorkled you could actually hear it very loud as you got close to one.

No prob, I live on my yacht and when I moved on there was lots of snap, cracke and pop, after lots of very smartass comments from this wonderful forum, I jumped in at night with scuba gear. The answer, fish feeding of the bottom of the hull.. I swear this is what it is..... Look for yourself.

That was initially my worry, I had visions of the anode fizzing away beneath the boat! However after isolating all the batteries the noise persisted and happened everytime we were moored up at night, which left me with the limpet theory. However Robert's fish feeding on the hull is more credible.

Often caused by fish, shrimp etc, under the boat, heard it myself many times, but not anymore, 2" of wood between me and the water, quiet! Could also be polyestermites, eating there way through the hull, same as gribble, but a mutation specifically mutated to eat polyester boats. They have a mouth at both ends so as to be able to eat two boats at once when in tightly packed marinas.

I discovered a similar phenomenon near Southwold a few years ago, but whilst on a beach. Locals assured me that it was a local mutation of the Suffolk Sand Kraken.
Vicious blighters, I can tell you. I have seen one of them almost leave the ground.

Yeh! I know of them, also people think it's weather damaging their bricks, it's not, it's the rarely seen very shy nocturnal purple brick eater, you have been warned!

Buggers aint they?!
The Solent Pencil Aardvark is my personal bugbear. Their snout has evolved to consume a standard 2B pencil in one snuffle.
Never caught one yet, but I swear he eats all the ones from the chart table.

So that's whats been crapping all over my boat, is it! What should I mount on the mast to scare 'em away ? Presumably an owl is no good!

Re: Solent Pencil Aardvark

Think that's bad, what about the biro monitor lizard? Has steerable tongue and can lick a pen clean off a table from the bilges in the blink of an eye.

Foolishly introduced from S America and can clear a boat or house within minutes.

Re: Solent Pencil Aardvark

Ones found else-where are technically different species. The breeding colony of SPA's currently seen nesting in Newtown creek and hunting around Hurst (Pentelis Imranis) are different from the ones (Pentelis Vulgaris) which were introduced to the upper reaches near Portchester for pest control. (Along with the Cowes Veruuca Gnome)
The rarest are called Sunday's Pencil Aadvark - (Pentelis Sunseekus) - known only to dwell inside white leather armchairs.
Fortunately, they do carry some nasty diseases - most alarming is Xanthoid Staggers - common in most Yachtsmen / women. Manifests it self with bouts of lurching, normally triggered by brown ale.

Never heard of the Biro Monitor Lizard. You must be making that one up.

G'day Jim,

The sound is from sea creatures such as shell fish, crabs and the like. We hear it most when anchored over coral or next to a reef.

Quite normal and nothing to worry about

Hope this answers your question.
