Hi all

Some time ago i was on another forum asking about these SMS gadgets for, similar to this one in this link

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GSM-Alarm...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

so this enables the LPG heater/lights etc to be turned on when away from the boat of before arrival to get it warmed up for when you get there.

Now all this is way over my had except the basics of sending a text message.

What i want though is one like above but one that can send me a message if the bilge pump kicks in or the LPG detector turns on aswel as me sending the boat a message.

Can anybody suggest a reliable one to look at please and not to pricey a si see some are £000 and in to the £0000. I dont think the one above can send a message to me you see but is a good price.

Thanks

Wayne

maybe this one, receives and sends a message.

For bilge you can use something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Real...257061?hash=item3d44fa43a5:g:nAEAAOSwOMdZVg9c

You'd use the ACC ignition line on the bilge and will activate when powered up (assuming it has a float switch). If that doesn't work you might look at a separate float switch.

The gas alarm - a different issue - you'd need to work out how to detect that the alarm was active ... ... you can get GSM for arduino so it should be possible, or it should be possible using some transistors on the sound output of the alarm to trigger something...

The oil off function will let you control 1 item.

There are Rasi guys on here who would do it with a RasPi too...

That could make it easy then, get a GSM SMS like i linked to for sending a message and the gadget you mention for receiving.

Will have to look into the LPG sensor idea you have, Never been much on the tech stuff of electricery.

For the LPG sensor see here:

Also has links to tutorials in the item description for Raspberry Pi.

As it has TTL outputs, you could probably interface it to the second GSM controller you linked to

Spot oin that ;)

I was looking at wiring in a complete sensor/alarm but that will be even better, i can fit one under the rear deck and also one in the cupboard where the Propex and Malaga5 is in the cabin. Thanks for that ;)

I have been shown this controller for the rest, not to bad a price so when i can i will look through how to set it up and how easy it is then treat my self for xmas :)

There seems to be plenty of choice in cheap GSM output devices, often sold as SMS Gate Openers.
There are cheap GSM alarms and trackers. Both input devices.
Not so easy to find GSM which does input and output.
We used to make them using Telit modules and a small microprocessor. These days I'd use an Arduino for a DIY job.

I like the look of that! There was no price on the website, can you tell me the cost?

Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick here, but IMHO, remotely igniting a gas appliance on an unattended boat is utter madness.... gas is dangerous. Please don't mess with it.

If it's going to go bang, the remoter the better?
I take your point that the gs should be off at the bottle when the boat is unattended.
Several friends of mine have these remote systems to turn on diesel heaters in their landrovers before getting out of bed.

So how long is safe to leave a cylinder/valves turned on, if your on a cruise for a weak or to do you suggest to turn the LPG off ? and when ?

So make a bacon butty then turn the gas off ?

Have the heating on to warn the boat then turn it off ?

etc etc

And if it goes bang i would rather not be on the boat when i turn on the heating.

Modern appliances have an auto cut of if there is a problem aswel.

Never leave it unattended with the gas on at the cylinder, but I leave that on whilst I'm using the boat, and I turn the supply to the cooker off on the pipe after each use.

Mine's diesel heating not gas.

The solenoid will not.

So to have an LPG alarm you can hear 24/7 and auto LPG cut off fited that is not safe ?

What about when your on the boat and ignite an LPG appliance.

I ask as honestly as i am confused to why very few folk say you should not ignite LPG appliances when not here, so what happens when you are on board.

do you turn it on and off as when needed if on for a weeks cruise etc ?
