Somewhat larger than Ford Sabre's, but similar and perfectly normal start up characteristics, old generation MTU's think they are 12V 396. However a real benchmark on how far we have come in the last 20 years with diesel technology. Up to date equivalent the MTU 2000 Series starts up real clean. Also take a close look at exhausts when the Red Jet puts the hammer down in Southampton water, loadsa black smoke until those big lumbering turbochargers get their act together.
