Hi all,

I have twin AD41A's with 450 hours on them in my Regal. Every time I start up from cold I get great big embarrassing plumes of white smoke. This disapears once the engines are warm. Is it time for new injectors?

general rule is

black: fuel (knackered injectors / over-propped)
blue: oil, (rebore needed/stuck piston rings)
white: new pope elected (or water in the exhaust: condensation, head gasket)

if it's actually vapourised diesel and it goes away after a while it might be a cylinder not firing through lack of compression. it would be accompanied by very rough running.

Single up your mooring lines and get going as quick as you can, all turbos will smoke when cold, do not hang around in the marina with the engines ticking over.

smelly diesel white means fuel not burning right caused by dribbling injectors, black means fuel injecting ok but not enough air for complete combustion . white smelly diesel smell usually injectors need nozzles servicing, get a diesel shop to put them on the test pump and give you a report. never buy new injectors, they are fully serviceable.

These lumps are notorious for smoking at start up. They are best started with the throttles at tickover if poss.

Get moving as soon as you can, so as to warm them up quickly.

You can always try soltron of course.

As long as the smoke disappears within about 20 seconds of start up its nothing to worry about - except being embarrassing because it makes a horrid smell. Having your injectors serviced might help.

I dont know this particular engine, but if it has glow plugs fitted, one of those may have packed up, which will not affect starting - but will cause the affected cylinder to smoke. Otherwise look at any other cold start mechanism to check its running properly.

Whats happening is that the engine is not fully burning all the atomised fuel from the injectors until it has started to warm up.
