Smokey boat heating

Tried the Eberspacher heating system as fitted to my new (2nd hand) boat and it was very smokey with diesel fumes coming out of the exaust. System seemed to work but fumes did not clear after the 10 or so minutes that I ran it for. Does this sound OK or have I got a major problem? Previous owner reckoned that it always does this and takes time to clear after period of non use.... Just did not seem right to me.

Any comments would be appreciated

This is indicative of loads of soot in the combustion chamber, clean it out and not only will it run cleaner it will be more effective too. Beware you might find a couple of pounds of soot in there so do it somewhere away from the boat, I suggest aboard Tony's boat ;)

For someone who admits to not being at all teccie you still have a lot of knowledge oh wise one. Guess it must have happened to you before?

Probably quicker and easier for Nick to come to you than down here to me. Now Eilleen's back you could let him clean out the heater in the utility room while she makes the coffee, and if you wear one of your reefer jackets the soot shouldnt show too much.......hope you had the place looking spick and span for her return and that you are now back to eating normal food etc......

Yep! Had the same problem with a Webasto and the engineers took out tons of soot. It was as right as rain after that.

Do it a B1's. He's got a nice new greenhouse to do it in and a mobile bogbrush for those hard to reach places!
 
you really are trying very hard to be persona non grata round here, aren't you.......
If you're not careful I will train bogbrush to bark at policemen everytime you pass one with your trailer and to scare sh*t out of the cows so's you have to spend every weekend cleaning your boat and you'll leave a fertiliser smell all the way down to Poole next month.
I was going to tell everyone what a great job you'd done with my canopy but now I will stick to telling the truth...............

Training BogBrush (...alias Bosun)

I went for a longish walk with swmbo and the hound this afternoon and I decided he should be trained to wait at road crossings etc........I kept saying "Sit" .... "Sit" and I am pleased to report that he almost got it right.....must be a bit dyslexic but never mind, I had a placcy bag in my pocket..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Think the new name for dog is much better than the old one. And very descriptive having seen his piccie.

Our Webasto heater had some oil which had dripped on to the lagging on the exhaust pipe from the heater to the outside. This would smoke and somehow got sucked into the air supply.
I removed the oil soaked bit and hey presto works a treat now.
It might be worth a look as it is easy to get to before you dismantle it as the others are suggesting.

Have you checked...

...that the (combustion) air intake is not restricted? The metering pump may be delivering too much fuel? My Eberspacher (Airtronic D2 - new last year) smokes for about 20-30 seconds on starting, but after that the exhaust is clear.
