Just an observation,

But

Why are most, if not all the pics of people sailing not smiling with happiness, they all look cold, wet or bored.

Hi Julie
You seem to have chanced upon a closely guarded secret but smiling and laughing on sailboat decks is severely frowned upon. Imagine if we all started smiling, all you mobo peeps would soon want to buy sailboats and join in the fun as well. Just ithink then what would happen to sailboat prices. The thought alone keeps me scowling. If the truth be known, it is really hard keeping a long face for long so we have to go down below to release all that pent-up laughter.
Remember, this is a secret that can only be whispered on sailing forum sites and then very quietly

Altought sailing is kinda serious stuff, if you zoom in my picture, you can see an odd smile here and there

More commonly aboard of a sailing vessel is the good ol' evil grin

And I totally agree with the previous post....

a few years ago i was doing an 'intro for beginners' in at our club. i had a couple of youngsters learning the delights of trapezing an int 14 and we were having a great time. a photographer was out in the rescue boat taking pictures for a big spread in the local paper; as i went past she said 'stop smiling' to which i replied 'why? i'm enjoying myself'

when the paper came out she'd somehow managed to catch me with a frown that would have outdone judge jeffreys at the bloody assizes.

so no, it's nothing to do with sailors being miserable, just that publishers think they ought to be!

Re: Gritty Determination

Is more the order of the day on sailing boats. We go more for quiet satisfaction.

I think if you check very few MoBo's are crewed by smileys either.

Admittedly one or two do look to be smiling but in truth it's a kind of rictus brought on by a combination of facts. Facts like "Yes we do need to refuel again" "Oh dear, the women in the MoBo brochures aren't really into boats" "Yes it is better to keep your teeth clenched when your pounding like that"

The other thing is of course yotties would have to smile for so long. With an enjoyable channel crossing taking anything up to 18 hours we'd wear our smiley muscles out.

well my picture was taken at 7am before the start of the Round the Island race this year and I had a stonking hangover and had very little sleep the night before. I was clutching a botte of water.
However most of the photos I have of people sailing we all have massive grins regardless of weather conditions - I guess its down to who you sail with!

<hr width=100% size=1>Its 11.59am - lets open the beers...

I frequent second hand book shops.
A recent purchase is Dinghy Days by Eileen Ramsay, pub Adlard Coles in 1959
It contains black and white photgraphs of the period.
Most of the pretty girls are smiling broadly, even if capsized.
A friend remarked that a photographer when encouraging a smile nowadays
might receive only an expletive or "You wish"!

Or perhaps only a better class of young lady sails?

Regards Briani
