Smelly Upholstery From Damp

Thanks chaps. Will keep playing with a few things. Do let us know about cheap sources for that underlay stuff as I think a solution which doesn't involve running an appliance is preferable if it can be found. Maeco a backup in extreme situations.

An earlier poster mentioned the importance of having two open hatches not just one. That was certainly true when we used to sleep in the aft cabin - in there if we opened both hatches, one was vertically lower than the other, we rarely got condensation. So last night thanks to a lull in the wind I left the main cabin hatch open as well as the one above our V-berth and there was a definite gentle flow of air I guess driven at least partially by the heat produced by us in the cabin. It was a particularly cold one last night, but not a drop of condensation anywhere! Perhaps the atmosphere was lower in humidity so I'm not counting my chickens but I think I'll try to find a way, as suggested, to leave the main hatch open even when it's windy and precipitating.

There's some nice photos of our deck this morning in the sun and snow here if you're interested...

Thanks again!

Cor! Your lady wife must be very understanding Capt'n if you have the main hatch open to create a through draught this weather

. We run TWO dehumidifiers one in aft cabin running 24/7 on a humidity stat (not had leccy bill yet)

and one in main saloon . All hatches shut down night time . Get about a litre per night out of aft cabin but toasty . We olduns need warmth !!

Hehe it's a good job you got that industrial generator earlier in the year Tezza with that lot running!! I remember comparing electric meter readings with you in 2009

Rose has a very thick sleeping bag. She said on occasion last night she was too hot!

couple of details my HR Rasmus has which help with this. There are slats of wood about 1" wide run laterally along the face of the hull, with about 3mm gap between each, firstly to finish the cabin nicely but also to keep you off the hull itself and create an air gap. Its a simple solution.

Any condensation runs down between wood and hull into the bilges and the edge of the cushion doesn't touch a wet surface.

bunk supports are fully ventilated 2x1" timber slats made into a frame.

There are Dorade ventilators above the lobby and into the heads and the third washboard has fitted louvres to allow airflow.

We have a cockpit cover which protects the hatch but it would still be okay unless it was really blowing from aft.

Used to get condensation under the front hatch but changed it for a lewmar ocean whcih solved that as it is better insulated.

We also still get damp on the underside of the deck but this is solved when we have the hatch on vent as we get airflow through the boat.

we also have a Taylor style diesel heater which give dry heat and fully dries out the boat.

Once that lot is going we don't have damp issues about. We pull the cushions off the boat in the winter when its laid up but even then the boat doesn't get that damp without people aboard which convinces me that people and cooking are the biggest source of condensation

I would fit the slats if I was living aboard and the boat didn't have them. it would also be a good solution for a wooden hull

Sold genny through lack of use .It was just rusting away on the aft deck. Must admit the shore supply lead does get a bit warm.Think it was because I forgot the calorifyer runs f

rom the mains too

Dreading the leccy bill though but the government has taken symphathy on me and stumped up £250 winter heating alowance
