Several cures were put forward in the psat for the rotten egg smell fron the loo.

The easiest was to flushout the pan and then to refill with freshwater from the showerhead.

It worked, no smell after a full week.

tony.

I freshwater flushed the loo threw out an old pair of boat wellies but still had a faint whiff in the boat. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Eureka, mystery smell traced to half a loaf of bread hiding in the back of the pots and pans locker, for some considerable time by the look of it... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can understand that putting fresh water in the loo will avoid a smell building up in the air, but surely when you flush it the first time you still get all the yucky water coming in from the inlet pipe. This is where the algae etc grow while the boat is not in use.

So now you can set up your Daily log, without upsetting your Daily crew /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Er, shouldn't that be "Daily Bog"???

It seems not although I don't know why - other than the fact that we haven't had much hot weather. I have a sanitiser thing fitted on the pipe from the pump to the bowl and I stick a bowl of fresh water down on the final pump out. Never had such a pong free loo.

Mr Full Circle has a scheme to run a T from the sink drain into the inlet pipe so you can put a bowl full of fresh water into the inlet pipe. Fresh water seems the answer.

Rotten eggs is hydrogen sulphide which is usually caused by bacteria. You need to kill the brutes. Also H2S eats steel so beware! Big problem in the oil industry so we give them a dose of biocide now and then.

Hmmm, I tried this idea of fresh water flush on leaving my boat last time. Returned to her at the weekend to find a solid green mat of mould over the surface of the water remaining in the loo! So I'm back to leaving neat sea water now as I have never actually had the H2S smell!

I have also been adding a little vinegar to the sea water before a final pump out This helps to reduce/ prevent lime scale in pipework & pump. Been doing it all season due to poor loo operation following severe scaling. The loo is now back to normal operation but I have not actually dismantled the pump/ pipes to see if the scale has gone.
