\'Smart Water\' protect property, deter thieves!!

I have come across 'Smart Water', it may be of use to some people to deter the theft of boats and parts of boats. I think if you are careful with it you can cover a number of items with the one batch. I guess you just have to do what you can to deter people, this is invisible to the naked eye which makes it a good deterent. It is simple to use I have put the link below :-

http://www.smartwater.com/

Having seen some reports of thefts, sometimes even if you thought you had found your stolen goods, this would identify them.

Also how many of you have noted down all your serial numbers, may be a good time before the season to make a note, the boat jumbles will soon be starting!

Cheers,

Good product tho, boatmark is a good thing to have, specially on a newer boat like yours. More manufacturers should do it as a matter of course.

Boatmark, basicall a chip that is embedded in the boat somewhere. The authorities can then run a reader over the boat and get the number of the chip, rather like that used for animals. The serial number is unique to that boat and the details registered.

Bit like chipping the family pooch or moggy. A lot of the PWC manufacturers do it as standard. A lot more of the boat makers should do it, anything to make it harder for the light fingered buggers about these days.

Theres also micro dot. Same sort of thing as Smartwater. and datatag of course. All my bikes have been datatag'd and have got most of the bike recovered after it was stolen and broken up into parts.

Well woth looking at the options, boat mark would be best for erm....boats!

I have searched the internet for boatmark, what a waste of time that was, there is nowhere that tells you how much it costs or where you can have it done, although it mentions you should get it done with the supplier, but there seems to be an option for secondhand boats as well. Given up now.

Think you might find some info on the BMIF site, or do a search on the ybw sites. Should come up with something.

Boatmark DIY kit used to cost about 15 quid, but that was a few years ago. Used to be run by HPI.,

There's a boatmark information request form on the BMIF website http://bmif.londonweb.net/ click on services

I thought Boatmark was the chip thing, if not whats the chip thing called? A lot of the PWC builders use it as standard if I remember correctly.

Yes, same thing. You used to have to have it installed, but then they changed policy to allow you to DIY, as I understand it, but you still have to purchase from one from about 100 authorised dealers. Pathetically little information about it for several years now, so I wonder if they aren't pushing it for some reason. HPI (the car check people) used to run it, but there's no information on their website anymore.

Back in 99 the DIY kit was about 12.99 + VAT. Other than that, I haven't a clue!

Brendan & Barry, I have looked everywhere for that boatmark, giving up now. I can't believe that if it is meant to be so good that you can't find it on the internet. Anyway it's all the same kind of thing, I guess I will just get some of that water stuff and just 'splash it all over'. At least it will cover bits that people might nick off it as well.

Thanks anyway,

Brendan, I saw all that nonsense. If it is that unusual and nobody talks about it then I don't want it. It will only work if people know abot it and use it, seems a bit of a flop if you ask me. If it was that good there would be stuff written about it, not just paid advertising, I have not seen one thing. I might as well go to the vet and get a dog chip, same thing. But as I say it will only be on the boat, doesn't stop anyone nicking your engine or parts, this smart water is the thing for me, better value IMHO.

Thanks anyway,

Don't shoot the messenger. You asked, I provided information. If it's not the solution you require, it's not a problem with me.

Thanks, I have seen most of those, but where is the main site, and where are the details of cost? If I have missed it I apologise, but it seems such an effort to try and find any info, they are not doing anu favours IMHO for themselves if they want it publicised and used.

Cheers,

Pete

Re: \'Smart Water\' protect property, deter thieves!!

Following your link clearly identifies Boatmark as an HPI tracking register - just a database - not anything physical. I think the references to a 'chip' must be something else entirely.

"BOATMARK is the national register of marine craft, which is operated by HPI on the behalf of the British Marine and Industries Federation (BMIF).
The increased level of boat ownership in the UK has led to a rise in the number of boat related thefts and fraud. BOATMARK records the boat details, based on the Hull Identification Number (HIN) given at manufacture. When a boat is purchased, the new owner can record themselves as the keeper. This means that the boat can be tracked at every stage, from factory to dealer and from the dealer to customer.

Before buying a boat contact BOATMARK to check whether the boat is free from finance and that the person selling the boat has the right to do so.
Contact MINDER on 01722 435478 or email minder.uk@hpi.co.uk for further information.Contact BOATMARK on 01722 413346 for further information."
