Smart TV's & marina wifi

I recently bought two smart TV's for my boat, unpackaged them at home successfully connected them to the internet etc etc

Upon installing them on the boat I can't get them to connect to the marina Wi-Fi. I sign into the Wi-Fi account and the screen says I'm connected but when trying to open the internet browser the TV says I'm not connected to internet! . When connecting I don't think the TV's browser's can open the"marina guest Wi-Fi sign-in page" .

I've also tried connecting them to my mobile phone (used as a Wi-Fi hotspot) and that doesn't work either

I'm guessing it's because the browser's on the TV are quite basic. The TV's are Toshiba BTW

Has anyone else had this issue and have you managed to find a solution??
 
Not sure I can help as I've not used the toshiba tv but it seems strange that you would make the connection through a browser. On my Philips/lg/Samsung smart TVs it's in the connections menu that you set the wireless up, in fact I'm not sure I've used the web browser on a tv for a long time, it's all about the apps....

I would reset to factory settings on the to and then try tethering to your phone again, to be fair, unless you are very fortunate, that's the best bet anyway as you'll struggle streaming on most marina hotspots...
A quick look on Google shows toshiba set up at
Menu>network>wireless and then the usual; I'm sure that you already know this so a reset is probs the best thing to try...

Quite a lot of "Internet of things" type smart devices do not like "Captive Portals"

Before letting you through the WiFi the marina presents you with a webpage (The Captive Portal) to sign-on, the simple TV software that connects to the WiFi does not expect this when it gets its IP address so does not sign on completely. The TV browser does not then pick up the sign-on page itself. You could buy a small Wifi Router and connect the TVs to that and then connect it to the marina WiFi whenever you arrive at a marina, then use a laptop or phone connected to your small WiFi router to log in through the Captive Portal.
 
We've had similar on our Samsung TVs, only way is to open up the Internet browser app and sign in that way once the marina page asking for password appears .

If you are hoping to stream tv via the marina wifi that will be one heck of a lot of Data I would wonder if the Marina would have the bandwidth.

Another way would be to connect a laptop and use the HDMI out on it to connect to the TV

Are you expecting to watch TV across the marina WiFi
If so - I don't think that the marina WiFi would be up to it.

I use a 4G (LTE) (unlimited data) internet connection and that works.
However, I wouldn't use the "Smart" bit of a Smart TV
I connect Raspberry Pis to all my TVs
Each Raspberry Pi runs Kodi (using Openelec)
Dead easy to get working but you do need a fast, always on, internet connection - not the marina Wifi.

If you would like to know more about Kodi/Raspberry Pi, just let me know.
Raspberry Pi is about £30 - but for £50 you get it in a box with a power supply and leads etc - just add a keyboard for about £8 and away you go - just load the Exodus App and see what that offers.

I soon realised the marina Wi-Fi isn't that great when using my tablet on it! But more importantly the damn TV won't connect to my mobile phone (used as a Wi-Fi hotspot) either

I've tried factory resets on the TV's several times but without success so was guessing it was down to their basic software/browser's

So my options are if I'm reading this right?

A) a separate router
B) going the raspberry/kodi route

We had similar problems getting my sons xbox to connect to the marina wifi due to the browser login requirement for the wifi. Now the netgear connects to the marina wifi because it can handle the login and the xbox connects to our private wifi created by the netgear which requires basic passcode authentication. Only took a few minutes to setup.
 
Please don't attempt it. Most marina wifi setups are provided as a free resource to allow berth holders and visitors sufficient access to the internet to allow them to check their emails, get weather information and do some 'light' web browsing. Trying to stream TV will likely render is useless to everyone else if you manage to do it at all as you'll hog all the available bandwidth. Please be considerate to your fellow marina wifi users.

I hear what you say but these days if one connects their fruit based generic mobile device or laptop to public wifi, chances are that apps will update, backups will begin, notifications will be sent from sponsors, photos will go up to the cloud and podcasts will rain down; even before you open safari...that's why your wifi is slow :(

He might not be streaming tv, he already has a tv. More likely he wants to use the TV to surf the net, check mail, get weather information.

Thank you for the link, I've just ordered one, let's hope it works

@jerryHawkins.. as others have guessed I'd only use the marina wifi for general browsing. If I want to do any streaming then I'll use my phone as a wifi hot-spot

It's just at the moment the TV won't connect to either service!!
 
Quick update

I received and installed The netgear portable router that kevb recommended and I'm pleased to say it's done the job and everything's working fine now.

Our marina wifi is rubbish. I ended up with a 4g unlimited data only sim for 11 quid a month from 3. Connected up to a draytek router that transmits its own private wifi connection for all the iPads etc. My smart tv connects to that as well.
