smallest watermaker

Just following the thread about the Katadyn 40E water maker.
Is there something smaller ( and a bit cheaper)
I'm thinking of emergency or semi emergency use where the need is just to supply drinking water for a crew of 4.
We do have a 100gallon water tank which is plenty for our normal usage. But it could get contaminated or get low on a long passage.
(Our anticontamination system is to clean out the tank as best we can fill with the best water we can ( we are in Spain) add anti bacteria stuff and have a filter which removes the additive taste)

The Katadyn 6 water maker is the smallest hand operated but it is considered to the too small as it will bed a lot of hand pumping to make any reasonable quantity of water.

I have a Katadyn 35 water maker also hand operated and makes a lot more. I got mine many years ago as a used ex USAF emergency water maker

Surely for emergency backup in case of contamination or loss on a voyage, bottled water would be a more reliable and massively cheaper alternative?
We did the Atlantic with the luxury of generator and reliable, high capacity water maker - hot showers every day.
But we also took bottled water to survive safely (and manual pump sea water tap for washing up if needed).

If I could afford to do the Vendee, I'd have one or two Katadyns as backups Tony Bullimore relied on one during his emergency I think. For amateur cruising I have bought (if they deliver) the kickstarter thing.

Id be interested to know what you think of it. There appeared to be a lot of scepticism on various sailing fora when it was first announced.

Can you point me to the scepticism, please? I can apply for a refund until end of December. At the cheap price I thought t was worth a punt but had not heard of negative comments. I don't need the item, especially if it won't work if an emergency occurs.

If I don't ask for a refund I will report back IF it is delivered in Feb 2021. It seems all one needs to do is pump seawater through a membrane at high pressure.
Maybe the Katadyn is over priced. Maybe the crowdfunder is rubbish. I would appreciate any views.....have I wasted money? Not something I am keen to do.

A game changer watermaker if its as good as claimed.

Similar thoughts on cruiser net. Sweat more than you produce. I haven't heard a first hand report though hence I don't completely discount it.

Thanks. I will give it a punt as it says it comes with an extra membrane for free. £70 in total. I would only use it when the bottles ran out. If it works.....

Personally I would not bother with the 06 I would (as I did) go for the 35 or 40. The 40 has an electric motor but I think it an be hand operated just like the 35.

I a life raft you remove the motor an use the lever to make water.

Thanks, will do. From reading ( and now understanding) a lot more. I am beging to think that you really need to use watermakers on a regular basis rather than just having them sitting there 'just in case'. They need to be pampered a bit and stored correctly. I don't totally trust my fellow owners to always do this and we could find that when we needed it there was a problem.

Correct, once in comission we used ours every 3 days, even if it was just a back flush, the instructions said every 5 days max.

So, did anything happen? Did you get the watermaker? Or did you get the refund? It seems like theyre still not officially out as of yet, altough as of now they say itll be shipped out in august later this year.

Bit late, but about having a single water tank. Might be an idea to divide it into two? At least then any contamination would be in a part of your supply only. Maybe not practical in many cases, but worth a look.
