Do you still have a land based home? Do you plan on travelling further afield given you could go basically anywhere?
We used to live in a large 6 bedroom house in a very secluded part of Conwy in the middle of a forest. We thought it an ideal place to bring up kids. What we found after 10 years there is everyone disappeared to their own level and quarters and after a few years we realised we would not see each other during the working week and lived to be on the boat during weekends. The jump became painfully obvious when we noticed the boy had no outside school friends and my 13 year old daughter made several concerted efforts at suicide. The house, suburbia, rat race was not working for us and I came to understand its a social con. So we closed ranks, put everything into storage and moved aboard. Nobody gave up jobs or anything, I have always kept a home office, and the only sacrifices made so far is no dishwasher and I have to make my bed back to dinette to work. In its place I have found a perfect work life balance.
As for moving back, I honestly doubt it. We are so happy its almost rude, but 8 will play the cards carefully here. The idea is when a 15m berth becomes available I will get a 55 footer simply for the conveniences it can carry.
We moved from the river to a marina, but nearest end to the gate, to be outside the ghetto so the kids can get to school easily. When not in school we leave and l8ve on anchor. In a few years once they go to university etc we will slip away with a letter of good bye etc and lead a more constant cruiser definition of life. As long as we have internet we make a good living in our respective professions. That gives us a lot of room to explore and the only real restriction is time zones and the hours I want to work.
