Do you register your boat on the small ships register if so then why, what do you get for it, is it needed when only cruising UK inland coastal waters or do you only need it if going further afield like across the channel etc

I have registered all my previous boats on the ssr but just wondered if I need to register my new to me boat as we have no intension of going any further than the uk south coastal waters

We are reistered with the CG66 Safety Identification Scheme: but not the ssr at the minute are you
 
My personal view is that it all adds to the providence of the boat, and is essential if you do decide to go to France or the CI as it proves your tax responsibility is to UK HMRC if nothing else.

You are not legally required to have it to sail in UK waters, but it is a mandatory requirement if you wish to apply for a warrant to fly a Special Ensign.
 
We're registered because we go to France and the Channel Islands several times a year.

If you stay in the UK, and you don't want to register, then you don't have to.

Interesting if already on the SSR and you don't update it, possible claim, the broker when you come to sell the boat will like it more as you have the documents, its only £25 and online

That sentence doesn't quite make sense to me, but if you think having an SSR will make a difference to selling the boat, just apply for one when that time comes.

SSR is irrelevant in relation to the title to the boat. While a broker may ask to have a copy of the SSR, there is no compulsion to register at all and lack of registration is not a barrier to a sale.

Different if it is on the Part 1 register which is a register of title, but even then if it is lapsed, lack of registration is not a barrier to passing title.

Which is why recently I have sorted an SSR, and my VHF DSC AIS etc to my home port of Guernsey..

It was beginning to become a bureaucratic nightmare on my trips to France..{ Dont even think of going without the correct, in date documentation.}

All because I wished to keep the VAT paid status on the boat , which in todays market is a complete waste of time in my opinion..
