Are there and advantages/disadvantages to having a boat which has a SSR number?
I've noticed a boat we're going to view has a SSR number on it, don't know if it's still current. I presume it's part 3.

If you take the boat to France etc an SSR certificate seems to keep the douaniers happy.

No disadvantages. The registration is peculiar to the current owner so s/he notifies the registrar when the boat is sold. No compulsion for you to register unless you want to go aboroad with the boat. See the RYA site "Taking your boat abroad" for a full explanation.
