Hi,
I have a 16' gaffer which currently has a Mercury 4hp auxiliary but this is reamarkably heavy and cumbersome. I was hoping to fit a lighter engine but am struggling to find anything suitable, the old tohatsu 3.5 seems ideal but I'm unable to source one. Does anyone know of a similar lightweight engine on the Market?

a Featherweight (what a mis-named engine!) may just push your 16 footer along, but if you are looking at a Seagull, a 40+ or Centuary would be better. Be aware however that you will tend to find a pool of lubricant from the bevel drive lying under the engine after it has been on a storage stand for any time (even overnight). They are also oily beasts and best handled in old clothes. Not for the blazer and flannels type of sailor at all. I hear that getting spark plugs is problematic; you can't just run into Halfords.

Having said all that, I loved my old 102 longshaft, which drove my old six-metre at 4 knots in calm water and never failed to start.

If you were a bit closer, a mate might just swap his Tohatsu 3.5 long shaft for your 4hp. Probably a related engine as they share power heads.

Gotta Seagull 40+ in the shed, mint.
