We have just been quoted no less than £350.00 + VAT for repair to our Mariner 8hp /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. The gearbox seal has gone and it's full of water. They didn't say how long the "part"would take to get but said it would be a problem. Do we throw it away and get a new (second hand) one, if so where from and how much to pay or do we have it repaired?
Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Might be better sticking this on the PBO forum but a seal is just a few quid. The bill must be mostly labour indicating it may be a difficult job. It it were me I would attempt the job myself if you know what seal needs repacing.

Edit: depending upon what type of seal it is, I wouldn't have thought it would be difficult to obtain.

Edit again: of course the bill could indicate that some internals also need replacing due to water damage.

Sounds like a lot of money for a washout and new seal. Cannot you take it to bits yourself and fit a new seal?

Look at this web site to get an idea of prices. If you were around Manchester I would get a quote off Bill Higham as they appear to have a good reputation (and they are "up north" where prices are more reasonable).

Can you get the old seal out yourself ? If so take the seal to a motor factors who may be able to help . A good wash out and fresh oil should then do the trick .

If it's the seal behinf the prop on the prop shaft I've also got one gone on a 20 hp Yamaha. I've ordered one, £3.50 incl postage from Holland. I'm going to dig it out by brute force and thump in a new one. It is visible. The cost is probably because your engineer is wanting to pull out the gear cluster and service it. Getting the retaining nut out can be an excercise in itself, often they have to be drilled out due to corrosion, and then the gear cluster housing has to be pulleed out, again service tools due to corrosion. However the seals do not require the cluster to be pulled, just chisel them to destruction and clean out the bits. The other one is under the water pump on the drive shaft once you have removed the lower leg, same thing applies.

If you still want to chuck the motor away chuck it at me 'cos I love rebuilding old o/boards, I'm on my 4th non-runner at present, the others are now goers, all resprayed and where applicable new decals. Got to do something while I'm unemployed you see!
