me mate Jon who came sailing with me in Scotland has been allocated a slice of money to buy himself a boat

Swin ranger size

he is going to keep the boat on a pontoon on the east coast

He is prepared to spend a fair amount of cash as he was contemplating a Fisher 25

but I think that he might have more fun with a slightly smaller boat and get a better equipped smaller vessel

easier to single hand, less wight involved around marinas etc

so is there anything smaller than a Fisher that you can recommend for say under £20,000

The swin ranger is great - but they are getting pretty aged now

D

The Fisher 25 just looks so lovely, though! Nothing else that size looks as good. Can't imagine it would be any more difficult to single-hand or manoeuvre than similar-sized or marginally smaller boats.

How about a Westerly Centaur with a decent motor?

I agree, but his missus would have blamed me for brainwashing him

and....

the Centaur is a a real sailor's boat

Jon is as much a fisherman as a sailor

although a Centaur would do him fine as well

being able to retreat to a warm cabin to get home will be quite important but with a tiller pilot you can always get out of the rain.

I fear that my mantra about only going once around the hamster wheel of life and the obligation to make the most of the ride finally struck home

his ideal day is three hours sailing and five hours fishing

Has to be the Fisher 25. Had one for a few years and sailed her back from Greece. Can't think of a better, safer combination in just 25'. Still hanker after her really!

I agree they are cracking boats and there have been lots of days when I thought an enclosed steering position would have been a wonderful thing

tell me about....

handling in mariners

and

getting into the boat from a dinghy

I am also a fan of the F25. In sloop rigged form it actually sails really well, much better than expected.

It's a heavy little ship, which is good for single handed mooring. Can't say I've ever accessed one from a dingy but it does not have the high canoe stern of her larger sisters.

If he wants an all consuming hobby - they are wooden - then consider the Miller Fifers.

Lovely boats and he could have real pride of ownership with something like that if he could do the maintenance.

I've always liked the F25 for its solidity, headroom and weatherproof style. If your mate isn't primarily a sailing man, I doubt the Fisher's huge windage will reduce his enjoyment.

Not cheap though, although I've heard of some damp & stinky ones for slightly under £20K.

How about the Steadfast 24?

If I ever replace my current boat with something bigger, I'll dream of a Fisher 34. Meanwhile, has your friend thought of a Catfisher - that's the catamaran version? A chap I know restored one, and it had lots of lovely room for fishing.

Cox Master Mariner. 22' and surprising accommodation, nice aft cockpit for fishing, galley, heads etc and an odd pair of bunks forward. I looked at a nice example before the Colvic Watson 28 came along. £12000 for a really good clean example. Probably sails like a brick but nice and comfy and bilge keels for the east coast. Just a thought.

How about a Newbridge Venturer with a decent engine ? They aren't wonderful sailing boats, and build quality needs a careful eye, but they have plenty of room for fishing - as long as a big open cockpit isn't deemed essential - and should be easy to handle, also relatively cheap, or should be.

There's a Cox Master Mariner at my club, looks ideal - getting on a bit, but surely if well maintained - inc engine - that shouldn't matter much.
